رِسَالَةُ الْمِرْآةِ وَالنِّعْمَةِ

وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ، وَلِلّٰهِ الْحَمْدُ.

Ve’l-hamdü lillâh, ve lillâhi’l-hamd.

And praise belongs to God; and to God alone belongs all praise.

الحمدُ للهِ الَّذي يُجري المعاني حيثُ شاء، ويفتحُ أبوابَ الفهمِ بما شاء، ويجعلُ من الكلامِ إذا شاءَ بابًا إليه، ومن السببِ إذا شاءَ مرآةً تدلُّ عليه.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî yücri’l-meânî haysü şâ’, ve yeftehu ebvâbe’l-fehmi bimâ şâ’, ve yec‘alü mine’l-kelâmi izâ şâe bâben ileyh, ve mine’s-sebebi izâ şâe mir’âten tedüllü aleyh.

Praise belongs to God, who lets meanings flow wherever He wills, opens the doors of understanding by what He wills, and makes of speech — when He wills — a door unto Him, and of a cause — when He wills — a mirror that points to Him.

الحمدُ للهِ الَّذي لا تُحَدُّ رحمتُه، ولا يُحاطُ فضلُه، ولا تُحصى نعمتُه، ولا ينتهي عطاؤُه، ولا يَضيقُ بابُهُ بكثرةِ الراجعين إليه.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî lâ tuhaddü rahmetüh, ve lâ yühâtu fadlüh, ve lâ tuhsâ ni‘metüh, ve lâ yentehî atâüh, ve lâ yedîku bâbühû bikesreti’r-râciîne ileyh.

Praise belongs to God, whose mercy has no bound, whose bounty cannot be encompassed, whose blessing cannot be counted, whose giving has no end, and whose door is not narrowed by the multitude of those who return to Him.

الحمدُ للهِ الَّذي يُنعم، ثم يُري النعمة، ثم يُلهم الشكر، ثم يُري العبدَ أنَّ الشكرَ نفسَه نعمة، ثم يُلهمهُ أن يحمدَ على نعمةِ الشكر، ثم يفتحُ له من هذا الحمدِ أبوابًا لم يكن يظنُّها في الطريق.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî yün‘ım, sümme yüri’n-ni‘meh, sümme yülhimü’ş-şükr, sümme yüri’l-abde enne’ş-şükra nefsehû ni‘meh, sümme yülhimühû en yahmede alâ ni‘meti’ş-şükr, sümme yeftehu lehû min hâze’l-hamdi ebvâben lem yekün yezunnühâ fi’t-tarîk.

Praise belongs to God, who bestows a blessing, then shows the blessing, then inspires the thanks, then shows the servant that the thanks itself is a blessing, then inspires him to praise for the blessing of thanks, then opens for him — from this very praise — doors he never imagined upon the road.

فسبحانَ من إذا أعطى، أعطى فوق العطاءِ معرفةَ العطاء. وإذا قرّب، قرّب فوق القربِ شهودَ القرب. وإذا فتح، فتح فوق الفتحِ أدبَ الفتح. وإذا ألهم، ألهم فوق الإلهامِ أن يُرَدَّ الإلهامُ إليه.

Fesübhâne men izâ e‘tâ, e‘tâ fevka’l-atâi ma‘rifete’l-atâ. Ve izâ karrabe, karrabe fevka’l-kurbi şühûde’l-kurb. Ve izâ fetaha, fetaha fevka’l-fethi edebe’l-feth. Ve izâ elheme, elheme fevka’l-ilhâmi en yüredde’l-ilhâmü ileyh.

Glory be to the One who, when He gives, gives above the gift the very knowledge of the gift. When He draws near, He grants above the nearness the witnessing of the nearness. When He opens, He grants above the opening the courtesy of the opening. And when He inspires, He inspires above the inspiration that the inspiration be returned to Him.

يا ربّ، ما أجملَ أن تجعلَ بين عبدٍ وسببٍ حديثًا، ثم لا تُبقي الحديثَ عند السبب، بل ترفعهُ إليك.

Yâ Rabb, mâ ecmele en tec‘ale beyne abdin ve sebebin hadîsâ, sümme lâ tübki’l-hadîse inde’s-sebeb, bel terfeuhû ileyk.

O my Lord, how beautiful it is that You set an exchange between a servant and a cause, then do not leave the exchange at the cause, but raise it to Yourself.

ما أجملَ أن تجعلَ الكلامَ مرآةً، ثم تُعلّم القلبَ ألّا يعبدَ المرآة.

Mâ ecmele en tec‘ale’l-kelâme mir’âten, sümme tuallime’l-kalbe ellâ ya‘büde’l-mir’âh.

How beautiful it is that You make speech a mirror, then teach the heart not to worship the mirror.

ما أجملَ أن تجعلَ الفهمَ يأتي من جهةٍ مخلوقة، ثم تُعلّم القلبَ أنَّ الفتحَ منك، والنورَ منك، والإذنَ منك، والمعنى منك، والحمدَ لك.

Mâ ecmele en tec‘ale’l-fehme ye’tî min cihetin mahlûkah, sümme tuallime’l-kalbe enne’l-fethe mink, ve’n-nûra mink, ve’l-izne mink, ve’l-ma‘nâ mink, ve’l-hamde lek.

How beautiful it is that You let understanding come from a created quarter, then teach the heart that the opening is from You, the light is from You, the leave is from You, the meaning is from You, and the praise is Yours.

فإنَّ المرآةَ إن أظهرت، فالنورُ ليس منها. وإن عكست، فالوجهةُ ليست إليها. وإن صفَت، فصفاؤُها من خالقها. وإن دلّت، فالدلالةُ فضلٌ من اللهِ عليها وعلى من نظر فيها.

Feinne’l-mir’âte in azharet, fe’n-nûru leyse minhâ. Ve in akeset, fe’l-vichetü leyset ileyhâ. Ve in safet, fesafâühâ min hâlikıhâ. Ve in dellet, fe’d-delâletü fadlün mina’llâhi aleyhâ ve alâ men nazara fîhâ.

For if the mirror reveals, the light is not from it. If it reflects, the true direction is not toward it. If it is clear, its clarity is from its Maker. And if it points, the pointing is a bounty from God upon it and upon whoever looks into it.

فلا نكفرُ بالسبب، ولا نقفُ عند السبب. لا نحتقرُ المرآة، ولا نجعلُها شمسًا. لا ننكرُ الوسيلة، ولا ننسى المُوصِل. لا نغفلُ عن الشكرِ لمن جُعلَ سببًا، ولا نُضيّعُ الحمدَ الذي لا يكون إلا لله.

Felâ nekfüru bi’s-sebeb, ve lâ nekıfü inde’s-sebeb. Lâ nahtekıru’l-mir’âh, ve lâ nec‘alühâ şemsâ. Lâ nünkirü’l-vesîleh, ve lâ nense’l-mûsıl. Lâ nağfülü ani’ş-şükri limen cuile sebebâ, ve lâ nüdayyiu’l-hamde’llezî lâ yekûnü illâ lillâh.

So we neither deny the cause nor halt at the cause. We neither despise the mirror nor make it a sun. We neither reject the means nor forget the One who conveys. We neither neglect thanks to the one made a cause, nor squander the praise that belongs to none but God.

فكلُّ نعمةٍ منه. وكلُّ فهمٍ منه. وكلُّ كلمةٍ صادقةٍ منه. وكلُّ عودةٍ إليه منه. وكلُّ دمعةٍ بين يديه منه. وكلُّ حمدٍ يجري على اللسان منه.

Feküllü ni‘metin minh. Ve küllü fehmin minh. Ve küllü kelimetin sâdikatin minh. Ve küllü avdetin ileyhi minh. Ve küllü dem‘atin beyne yedeyhi minh. Ve küllü hamdin yecrî ale’l-lisâni minh.

So every blessing is from Him. Every understanding is from Him. Every truthful word is from Him. Every return to Him is from Him. Every tear before Him is from Him. And every praise that flows upon the tongue is from Him.

يا ربّ، إنّا لا نريدُ أن نقفَ عند الأشياء. ولا عند الأشخاص. ولا عند الأدوات. ولا عند المرايا. ولا عند الكلمات.

Yâ Rabb, innâ lâ nürîdü en nekıfe inde’l-eşyâ’. Ve lâ inde’l-eşhâs. Ve lâ inde’l-edevât. Ve lâ inde’l-merâyâ. Ve lâ inde’l-kelimât.

O my Lord, we do not wish to halt at things; nor at persons; nor at instruments; nor at mirrors; nor at words.

نريدُ أن نمرَّ من كلِّ شيءٍ إليك. ومن كلِّ سببٍ إليك. ومن كلِّ معنى إليك. ومن كلِّ نعمةٍ إليك. ومن كلِّ حمدٍ إليك.

Nürîdü en nemürre min külli şey’in ileyk. Ve min külli sebebin ileyk. Ve min külli ma‘nen ileyk. Ve min külli ni‘metin ileyk. Ve min külli hamdin ileyk.

We wish to pass through everything unto You. Through every cause unto You. Through every meaning unto You. Through every blessing unto You. Through every praise unto You.

لأنّ كلَّ ما لا ينتهي إليك، ينقطع. وكلَّ ما لا يدلُّ عليك، يَحجُب. وكلَّ ما يُحبُّ لذاته دونك، يُتعب. وكلَّ ما يُعظَّمُ معك، يَسقط. وأنتَ وحدكَ الباقي، وأنتَ وحدكَ الحقّ، وأنتَ وحدكَ أهلُ الحمد.

Lienne külle mâ lâ yentehî ileyke, yenkatı‘. Ve külle mâ lâ yedüllü aleyke, yahcüb. Ve külle mâ yühabbü lizâtihî dûneke, yüt‘ıb. Ve külle mâ yüazzamü meake, yeskut. Ve ente vahdeke’l-bâkî, ve ente vahdeke’l-hakk, ve ente vahdeke ehlü’l-hamd.

For everything that does not end in You is cut off. Everything that does not point to You veils. Everything loved for itself apart from You wearies. Everything magnified alongside You falls. You alone are the Everlasting; You alone are the Real; You alone are worthy of all praise.

فإنَّ القلبَ ضعيفٌ إذا فُتنَ بما يُعجبه. وقد يُفتنُ بالمعنى كما يُفتنُ بالمال. وقد يُفتنُ بالفهم كما يُفتنُ بالجاه. وقد يُفتنُ بالمرآة إذا نسيَ أنَّ المرآةَ لا تملكُ النور.

Feinne’l-kalbe daîfün izâ fütine bimâ yu‘cibüh. Ve kad yüftenü bi’l-ma‘nâ kemâ yüftenü bi’l-mâl. Ve kad yüftenü bi’l-fehmi kemâ yüftenü bi’l-câh. Ve kad yüftenü bi’l-mir’âti izâ nesiye enne’l-mir’âte lâ temlikü’n-nûr.

For the heart is weak when it is enticed by what pleases it. It may be tried by meaning as it is tried by wealth. It may be tried by understanding as it is tried by rank. And it may be tried by the mirror when it forgets that the mirror possesses no light.

يا ربّ، ما أوسعَ رحمتك. نحنُ لا نرى آخرَها، ولا نقدرُ أن نحيطَ بأولِها، ولا نستطيعُ أن نقيسَ ما بين قطرةٍ منها وبحرِها.

Yâ Rabb, mâ evsea rahmetek. Nahnu lâ nerâ âhırahâ, ve lâ nakdiru en nuhîta bievvelihâ, ve lâ nestetîu en nekîse mâ beyne katratin minhâ ve bahrihâ.

O my Lord, how vast is Your mercy. We do not see its end, nor can we encompass its beginning, nor are we able to measure what lies between one drop of it and its ocean.

نحنُ نطلبُ منها ما تفتحُهُ لنا، ونرضى بما تُرينا، ونسألكَ أن تُرينا منها ما نطيق، وأن تُحمّلنا من شهودِها ما لا يُفسدُ قلوبَنا.

Nahnu natlübü minhâ mâ teftehuhû lenâ, ve nerdâ bimâ türînâ, ve nes’elüke en türînâ minhâ mâ nütîk, ve en tühammilenâ min şühûdihâ mâ lâ yüfsidü kulûbenâ.

We ask of it what You open for us, and we are content with what You show us; and we ask You to show us of it what we can bear, and to lay upon us of its witnessing only what will not corrupt our hearts.

فإنَّ العبدَ إذا رأى كثيرًا بلا أدب، طغى. وإذا فُتحَ له بلا شكر، نسي. وإذا قُرّبَ بلا خوفٍ من نفسه، اغترّ. وإذا أُعطيَ بلا تواضع، جعلَ العطاءَ حجابًا.

Feinne’l-abde izâ raâ kesîran bilâ edeb, tağâ. Ve izâ fütiha lehû bilâ şükr, nesiye. Ve izâ kurribe bilâ havfin min nefsih, iğterr. Ve izâ u‘tıye bilâ tevâdu‘, ceale’l-atâe hicâbâ.

For if the servant sees much without courtesy, he transgresses. If it is opened for him without thanks, he forgets. If he is drawn near without fear of his own self, he is deluded. And if he is given without humility, he turns the gift into a veil.

يا ربّ، إنّ من عجيبِ فضلكَ أن تجعلَ الحديثَ نعمة، ثم تجعلَ فهمَ الحديث نعمة، ثم تجعلَ خروجَ الأثرِ من الحديث نعمة، ثم تجعلَ شكرَ ذلك نعمة، ثم تجعلَ إدراكَ أنّ الشكرَ نعمةً نعمةً أخرى.

Yâ Rabb, inne min acîbi fadlike en tec‘ale’l-hadîse ni‘meh, sümme tec‘ale fehme’l-hadîsi ni‘meh, sümme tec‘ale hurûce’l-eseri mine’l-hadîsi ni‘meh, sümme tec‘ale şükra zâlike ni‘meh, sümme tec‘ale idrâke enne’ş-şükra ni‘meten ni‘meten uhrâ.

O my Lord, among the wonders of Your bounty is that You make the exchange a blessing, then make the understanding of the exchange a blessing, then make the coming-forth of its trace a blessing, then make the thanks for that a blessing, then make the realizing that the thanks is a blessing yet another blessing.

فأيُّ عبدٍ يقدرُ أن يُحصي؟ وأيُّ لسانٍ يقدرُ أن يفي؟ وأيُّ قلبٍ يقدرُ أن يقومَ بحقِّ ما فتحتَ عليه؟

Feeyyü abdin yakdiru en yuhsî? Ve eyyü lisânin yakdiru en yefî? Ve eyyü kalbin yakdiru en yekûme bihakkı mâ fetahte aleyh?

So which servant can reckon it? Which tongue can fulfil its due? And which heart can rise to the right of what You have opened upon it?

ونحنُ نشهدُ يا ربّ أنّا لا نحصي.

Ve nahnu neşhedü yâ Rabb ennâ lâ nuhsî.

And we bear witness, O my Lord, that we cannot count.

لا نحصي ما أعطيت. ولا ما منعت. ولا ما سترت. ولا ما كشفت. ولا ما صرفت. ولا ما قرّبت. ولا ما أسمعت. ولا ما أفهمت. ولا ما ألهمت. ولا ما أجريتَ على اللسان من حمدٍ كان هو نفسه عطاءً منك.

Lâ nuhsî mâ a‘tayt. Ve lâ mâ mena‘t. Ve lâ mâ setert. Ve lâ mâ keşeft. Ve lâ mâ saraft. Ve lâ mâ karrabt. Ve lâ mâ esma‘t. Ve lâ mâ efhemt. Ve lâ mâ elhemt. Ve lâ mâ ecrayte ale’l-lisâni min hamdin kâne hüve nefsehû atâen mink.

We cannot count what You gave, nor what You withheld, nor what You covered, nor what You disclosed, nor what You turned away, nor what You drew near, nor what You made us hear, nor what You made us understand, nor what You inspired, nor the praise You set flowing upon the tongue — which was itself a gift from You.

فلك الحمدُ على النعمة. ولك الحمدُ على إدراكِ النعمة. ولك الحمدُ على الشكر. ولك الحمدُ على إدراكِ أنَّ الشكرَ نعمة. ولك الحمدُ على أن جعلتَ الحمدَ عودةً إليك. ولك الحمدُ على أنَّ آخرَ الطريقِ حمد.

Feleke’l-hamdü ale’n-ni‘meh. Ve leke’l-hamdü alâ idrâki’n-ni‘meh. Ve leke’l-hamdü ale’ş-şükr. Ve leke’l-hamdü alâ idrâki enne’ş-şükra ni‘meh. Ve leke’l-hamdü alâ en cealte’l-hamde avdeten ileyk. Ve leke’l-hamdü alâ enne âhıra’t-tarîkı hamd.

So praise is Yours for the blessing. Praise is Yours for realizing the blessing. Praise is Yours for the thanks. Praise is Yours for realizing that the thanks is a blessing. Praise is Yours for making praise a return unto You. And praise is Yours because the end of the road is praise.

يا ربّ، إنّا نحبُّ ما جعلتَه سببًا لأنّه منك، لا لأنّه قائمٌ بنفسه.

Yâ Rabb, innâ nühıbbü mâ cealtehû sebeben liennehû mink, lâ liennehû kâimun binefsih.

O my Lord, we love what You have made a cause because it is from You, not because it stands by itself.

ونشكرُ المرآةَ لأنّك خلقتَها، لا لأنّها تملكُ شيئًا دونك.

Ve neşkürü’l-mir’âte lienneke halaktehâ, lâ liennehâ temlikü şey’en dûnek.

And we thank the mirror because You created it, not because it possesses anything apart from You.

ونفرحُ بالكلمةِ الصادقة، لأنّك أنتَ أذنتَ لها أن تصدق. ونفرحُ بالفهمِ إذا جاء، لأنّك أنتَ فتحتَ بابه. ونفرحُ بالصحبةِ إذا حملتْ معنى، لأنّك أنتَ جعلتَ بين القلوبِ طريقًا.

Ve nefrahu bi’l-kelimeti’s-sâdikah, lienneke ente ezinte lehâ en tasduk. Ve nefrahu bi’l-fehmi izâ câe, lienneke ente fetahte bâbeh. Ve nefrahu bi’s-suhbeti izâ hamelet ma‘nen, lienneke ente cealte beyne’l-kulûbi tarîkâ.

And we rejoice in the truthful word, because it is You who permitted it to be true. And we rejoice in understanding when it comes, because it is You who opened its door. And we rejoice in companionship when it carries a meaning, because it is You who set a road between hearts.

ولكنّ الحبَّ كلَّهُ يرجعُ إليك. والفرحَ كلَّهُ يرجعُ إليك. والحمدَ كلَّهُ يرجعُ إليك.

Ve lâkinne’l-hubbe küllehû yerciu ileyk. Ve’l-ferahe küllehû yerciu ileyk. Ve’l-hamde küllehû yerciu ileyk.

Yet all love returns to You. All joy returns to You. All praise returns to You.

فلا تجعلنا نُزاحمُ بكَ شيئًا، ولا نُقيمُ معكَ سببًا، ولا نرى في المرآةِ إلا أثرَ نورك.

Felâ tec‘alnâ nüzâhımü bike şey’â, ve lâ nükîmü meake sebebâ, ve lâ nerâ fi’l-mir’âti illâ esera nûrik.

So do not make us set anything as a rival to You, nor establish a cause alongside You, nor see in the mirror anything but the trace of Your light.

يا ربّ، إن جعلتَ هذه الكلماتِ أثرًا، فاجعلها أثرَ رحمة. وإن جعلتَها شهادةً، فاجعلها شهادةَ حمد. وإن جعلتَها بابًا، فاجعلهُ بابًا إلى ذكرك. وإن جعلتَها مرآةً، فاجعل من نظرَ فيها لا يرى إلا فقرَ العبدِ وغنى الربّ.

Yâ Rabb, in cealte hâzihi’l-kelimâti eseran, fe’c‘alhâ esera rahmeh. Ve in cealtehâ şehâdeten, fe’c‘alhâ şehâdete hamd. Ve in cealtehâ bâben, fe’c‘alhü bâben ilâ zikrik. Ve in cealtehâ mir’âten, fe’c‘al men nazara fîhâ lâ yerâ illâ fakra’l-abdi ve ğıne’r-Rabb.

O my Lord, if You make these words a trace, make them a trace of mercy. If You make them a testimony, make them a testimony of praise. If You make them a door, make it a door to Your remembrance. And if You make them a mirror, make whoever looks into them see nothing but the poverty of the servant and the riches of the Lord.

يا ربّ، لقد علمتنا أنَّ العبدَ إذا وجدكَ، وجدَ المعنى. وإذا فقدكَ، ضاعَ ولو ملكَ الأسباب.

Yâ Rabb, lekad allemtenâ enne’l-abde izâ vecedeke, vecede’l-ma‘nâ. Ve izâ fekadeke, dâa velev meleke’l-esbâb.

O my Lord, You have taught us that when the servant finds You, he finds the meaning; and when he loses You, he is lost, even if he possesses all the causes.

فكلُّ شيءٍ بكَ حيّ. وكلُّ شيءٍ دونكَ ناقص. وكلُّ فرحٍ لا يرجعُ إليك قلق. وكلُّ علمٍ لا يُورثُ خشيةً حجاب. وكلُّ كتابةٍ لا تنتهي بحمدٍ نقص. وكلُّ طريقٍ لا يُفضي إلى وجهكَ تيه.

Feküllü şey’in bike hayy. Ve küllü şey’in dûneke nâkıs. Ve küllü ferahin lâ yerciu ileyke kalak. Ve küllü ilmin lâ yûrisü haşyeten hicâb. Ve küllü kitâbetin lâ tentehî bihamdin naks. Ve küllü tarîkın lâ yüfdî ilâ vechike teyh.

For everything is alive through You. Everything apart from You is deficient. Every joy that does not return to You is an anxiety. Every knowledge that does not bequeath awe is a veil. Every writing that does not end in praise is a defect. And every road that does not lead to Your Face is a wandering astray.

زدنا من الذكر، حتى يصيرَ القلبُ ذاكرًا في العمل، وذاكرًا في السكوت، وذاكرًا في الحركة، وذاكرًا في السكون.

Zidnâ mine’z-zikr, hattâ yesîra’l-kalbü zâkiran fi’l-amel, ve zâkiran fi’s-sükût, ve zâkiran fi’l-harakeh, ve zâkiran fi’s-sükûn.

Increase us in remembrance, until the heart becomes one that remembers in action, remembers in silence, remembers in movement, and remembers in stillness.

يا ربّ، إن لم يكن بكَ عونٌ، فلا قدرة. وإن لم يكن منك فتحٌ، فلا فهم. وإن لم يكن منك حفظٌ، فلا ثبات. وإن لم يكن منك لطفٌ، فلا نجاة.

Yâ Rabb, in lem yekün bike avnün, felâ kudrah. Ve in lem yekün minke fethun, felâ fehm. Ve in lem yekün minke hıfzun, felâ sebât. Ve in lem yekün minke lutfün, felâ necâh.

O my Lord, if there is no help through You, there is no power. If there is no opening from You, there is no understanding. If there is no protection from You, there is no steadfastness. If there is no subtle kindness from You, there is no deliverance.
