The Epistle of the Answer

The Answer Before the Question

A supplication on the answer already moving toward the servant before he asks: a nearness beyond measure, the ordering of destiny, and the secret that «the whole affair belongs to God» — the cause a mirror, and writing itself a praise and a witness. The Arabic original with transliteration and English translation.

Bismillâhi’r-rahmâni’r-rahîm

In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful.

Ve’l-hamdü lillâh, ve lillâhi’l-hamd.

And praise belongs to God; and to God alone belongs all praise.

Praise belongs to God, who was Near before we knew the meaning of nearness; All-Hearing before we could pray well; All-Knowing before we knew where our need lay; Subtle before we saw the trace of His subtlety; and Answering before we could grasp the form of the answer.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî lâ yesbiku ilmehû suâlü’s-sâilîn, ve lâ tu‘limühû dumûu’l-bâkîne bimâ hafiye aleyh, ve lâ yezîdühû du‘âü’l-abdi ilmen bihâli’l-abd; ve lâkinnehû yülhimü’d-du‘âe rahmeh, ve yeftehu bâbe’s-suâli terbiyeh, ve yec‘alü’l-fakra ileyhi evvele’l-feth.

Praise belongs to God, whose knowledge is not preceded by the asking of those who ask; whose tears of the weeping cannot inform Him of anything hidden from Him; whose servant’s prayer adds nothing to His knowledge of the servant’s state — yet He inspires the prayer as a mercy, opens the door of asking as a nurturing, and makes need of Him the first of all openings.

Sübhâne men alleme’l-abde en yekûl: yâ Rabb, sümme kâne hüve’llezî semi‘a, ve hüve’llezî ecâbe, ve hüve’llezî debbera, ve hüve’llezî keşefe li’l-abdi ba‘de hînin enne’l-icâbete kânet tesîru ileyhi ve hüve lâ yeş‘ur.

Glory be to the One who taught the servant to say, “O my Lord,” then was Himself the One who heard, Himself the One who answered, Himself the One who ordained, and Himself the One who, after a while, disclosed to the servant that the answer had been moving toward him while he did not even feel it.

Yâ Rabb, mâ deavnâke illâ biiznik, ve mâ seelnâke illâ bita‘lîmik, ve mâ bekeynâ beyne yedeyke illâ lienneke ezinte li’l-kalbi en yelîn, ve mâ hamidnâke illâ lienneke ecrayte’l-hamde alâ elsinetinâ.

O my Lord, we called upon You only by Your leave; we asked of You only by Your teaching; we wept before You only because You permitted the heart to soften; and we praised You only because You made praise flow upon our tongues.

So praise is Yours for the blessing; praise is Yours for the seeing of the blessing; praise is Yours for the thanks; and praise is Yours for making the thanks itself yet another blessing.

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me — indeed I am near. I answer the call of the caller when he calls upon Me.” (al-Baqarah, 186)

Feyâ aceben likurbin lâ yükâsü bi’l-mesâfeh, ve liicâbetin lâ tükâsü bisûreti mâ talebe’l-abd, ve lirahmetin te’tî ahyânen fî sevbi’l-men‘, ve lifethin ye’tî ahyânen fî sûreti’l-iğlâk, ve linecâtin te’tî ahyânen fî hey’eti’l-inkişâf.

What a wonder: a nearness not measured by distance; an answer not measured by the form of what the servant requested; a mercy that sometimes comes in the garment of withholding; an opening that sometimes comes in the shape of a closed door; and a deliverance that sometimes comes in the guise of exposure.

İnne’l-abde yezunnü enne’d-du‘âe yebdeü min lisânih, ve’l-hakku enne’d-du‘âe kad yebdeü min rahmeti’llâhi bih.

The servant supposes that the prayer begins from his tongue; but the truth is that the prayer may begin from God’s mercy toward him.

Yezunnü’l-abdü ennehû kâle: yâ Rabb, febedee’l-emr, ve’l-emru inda’llâhi kad sebeka zâlik.

The servant supposes that he said, “O my Lord,” and so the matter began; yet with God the matter had already preceded that.

Yezunnü’l-abdü ennehû talebe’n-necâh, ve’n-necâtü kânet tünsecü lehû fi’l-ğayb.

The servant supposes that he sought the deliverance; yet the deliverance was being woven for him in the unseen.

Yezunnü’l-abdü ennehü’l-âne ücîb, ve innemâ’l-âne uriye mâ kâne’llâhü kad debbereh.

The servant supposes that he is now being answered; yet now he is only being shown what God had already ordained.

So praise be to God for the answer; praise be to God for the disclosure of the answer; praise be to God for what He answered with while we did not know; praise be to God for what He withheld while we did not understand; and praise be to God for what He delayed — for the delay was no neglect, but an ordering, a protection, and a subtle kindness.

“Perhaps you dislike a thing though it is good for you, and perhaps you love a thing though it is bad for you. God knows, and you do not know.” (al-Baqarah, 216)

Yes, O my Lord. You know, and we do not know.

Nekrahü’l-bâbe izâ uğlik, sümme nerâ enne iğlâkahû kâne hıfzâ. Nekrahü inkişâfe mâ kâne mestûrâ, sümme nerâ enne keşfehû kâne necâh. Nekrahü ıdtırâbe’l-kalbi inde mevdı‘, sümme nerâ enne zâlike’l-ıdtırâbe kâne inzârâ. Nekrahü’t-te’hîr, sümme nerâ enne’t-te’hîre kâne terbiyeh. Nekrahü en yünzea min eydînâ sebeb, sümme nerâ enne’s-sebebe lev bakıye lealleka’l-kalbe biğayri’llâh.

We dislike the door when it is shut, then we see that its shutting was a protection. We dislike the exposure of what was concealed, then we see that its exposure was a deliverance. We dislike the heart’s agitation at some matter, then we see that that agitation was a warning. We dislike the delay, then we see that the delay was a nurturing. We dislike a cause being torn from our hands, then we see that, had the cause remained, it would have bound the heart to other than God.

Fesübhâne men yuhricü’l-hayra min mevdıı’l-kerâheh, ve yec‘alü’l-hıfza fî sûreti’l-hırmân, ve’r-rahmete fî sûreti’l-hadd, ve’l-fethe fî sûreti’l-insırâfi an tarîkin lem yekün tarîkâ.

Glory be to the One who brings forth good from the place of what is disliked; who sets protection in the form of deprivation, mercy in the form of a limit, and opening in the form of a turning-away from a road that was never a road.

“Perhaps you dislike a thing, and God places much good in it.” (an-Nisâ, 19)

Fekem min şey’in kerihnâhü sâate vukûıh, sümme sâra bâben mine’l-hayri’l-kesîr.

How many a thing we disliked at the hour of its coming, then it became a door to abundant good.

Kem min dîkın sâra seah. Ve kem min zannin sâra yakînâ. Ve kem min havfin sâra sekîneh. Ve kem min curhin sâra basîrah. Ve kem min keşfin sâra ıtkan li’l-kalbi mine’t-tealluk. Ve kem min haddin sâra rahmeten tuîdü’l-eşyâe ilâ mevâdııhâ.

How many a constriction became a spaciousness. How many a doubt became certainty. How many a fear became tranquillity. How many a wound became insight. How many an exposure became the heart’s liberation from attachment. How many a limit became a mercy that returns things to their proper places.

Yâ Rabb, lekad allemtenâ enne’l-esbâbe lâ temlikü min emrihâ şey’â.

O my Lord, You have taught us that the secondary causes possess nothing of their own affair.

Es-sebebü yeteharrekü biiznik. Ve’l-bâbü yüftehu biiznik. Ve’l-kalbü yenşerihu biiznik. Ve’l-hicâbü yürfeu biiznik. Ve’l-hakku yazheru biiznik. Ve’l-abdü lâ yerâ illâ hîne türîh.

The cause moves by Your leave. The door opens by Your leave. The heart expands by Your leave. The veil is lifted by Your leave. The truth appears by Your leave. And the servant does not see except when You show him.

Kul inne’l-emre küllehû lillâh.

“Say: Indeed, the whole affair belongs to God.” (Âl ‘Imrân, 154)

Fe’l-emru küllühû lillâh. Lâ ba‘duhû lillâhi ve ba‘duhû li’l-esbâb. Ve lâ zâhiruhû li’l-halkı ve bâtınuhû lillâh. Bel’l-emru küllühû lillâh.

The whole affair belongs to God. Not part of it to God and part to the causes. Not its outward to the creation and its inward to God. Rather, the whole affair belongs to God.

El-bidâyetü lillâh. Ve’t-tedbîru lillâh. Ve’l-men‘u lillâh. Ve’l-atâü lillâh. Ve’l-keşfü lillâh. Ve’s-setru lillâh. Ve’l-haddü lillâh. Ve’l-fethu lillâh. Ve’l-hamdü lillâh.

The beginning is God’s. The ordering is God’s. The withholding is God’s. The giving is God’s. The disclosure is God’s. The concealment is God’s. The limit is God’s. The opening is God’s. And the praise is God’s.

İn raeynâ şahsan, fa’llâhü verâe’ş-şahs. Ve in raeynâ bâben, fa’llâhü verâe’l-bâb. Ve in raeynâ sebeben, fa’llâhü verâe’s-sebeb.

If we see a person, God is behind the person. If we see a door, God is behind the door. If we see a cause, God is behind the cause. If we see a movement in the world, it is God who orders the affair from above it, from within it, and from where we do not know.

Yüdebbirü’l-emr.

“He directs the affair.” (Yûnus, 3)

Ve mâ a‘zamehâ min kelimeh: yüdebbir.

And how tremendous a word it is: “He directs.”

Lâ yetrukü’l-emre fevdâ. Ve lâ yüsellimü’l-abde ile’l-müsâdefât. Ve lâ yec‘alü’d-dem‘ate dâieh. Ve lâ yec‘alü’l-havfe abesâ. Ve lâ yec‘alü’d-du‘âe savten yezûbü fi’l-hevâ.

He does not leave the affair to chaos. He does not surrender the servant to coincidences. He does not let the tear go to waste. He does not make the fear vain. He does not make the prayer a voice that dissolves into the air.

Rather, He directs. He directs before the asking. He directs during the waiting. He directs in the silence of the causes. He directs when the servant supposes that nothing is happening. Then, in a single hour, He unveils what had been woven over days and nights.

Ve hünâ yenkesiru vehmü’l-abd.

And here the servant’s illusion breaks.

Kâne yezunnü enne’l-umûra müteferrikah, feizâ bihâ huyûtun fî yedi’l-Vâhid.

He had supposed that matters were scattered — and behold, they are threads in the hand of the One.

Kâne yezunnü enne’d-du‘âe fî ciheh, ve’l-hâdisete fî ciheh, ve’l-kalbe fî ciheh, ve’r-rızka fî ciheh, ve’l-keşfe fî ciheh. Sümme izâ bi’l-hikmeti tecmeuhâ küllehâ.

He had supposed the prayer to be on one side, the event on another, the heart on another, the provision on another, the disclosure on another. Then, behold, wisdom gathers them all together.

Feyekûlü’l-kalb: sübhânek. Mâ kâne şey’un hârice ilmik. Ve mâ kâne şey’un hârice tedbîrik. Ve mâ kâne şey’un hârice rahmetik. Ve lâkinnî küntü lâ erâ.

So the heart says: Glory be to You. Nothing was outside Your knowledge. Nothing was outside Your ordering. Nothing was outside Your mercy. But I was not seeing.

“And you do not will except that God, the Lord of the worlds, wills.” (at-Takwîr, 29)

Hattâ meşîetünâ yâ Rabb minke. Hattâ rucûunâ ileyke minke. Hattâ du‘âünâ leke minke. Hattâ bükâünâ beyne yedeyke minke. Hattâ kavlünâ: el-hamdü lillâh, hüve min fadlik.

Even our willing, O my Lord, is from You. Even our returning to You is from You. Even our supplicating to You is from You. Even our weeping before You is from You. Even our saying, “Praise be to God,” is from Your bounty.

Felâ havle lenâ illâ bik. Ve lâ kuvvete lenâ illâ bik. Ve lâ fehme lenâ illâ mâ fetahte. Ve lâ ilme lenâ illâ mâ allemte. Ve lâ tevbete lenâ illâ mâ kabilte. Ve lâ zikra lenâ illâ mâ elhemte.

So we have no power except through You; no strength except through You; no understanding except what You have opened; no knowledge except what You have taught; no repentance except what You have accepted; and no remembrance except what You have inspired.

Fe’zkürûnî ezkürküm, ve’şkürû lî ve lâ tekfürûn.

“So remember Me; I will remember you. And be thankful to Me, and do not deny Me.” (al-Baqarah, 152)

Feizâ zekertüke yâ Rabb, feleyse’l-fadlü fî zikrî, bel’l-fadlü enneke ezinte lî en ezkürek.

So when I remember You, O my Lord, the merit is not in my remembering; rather, the merit is that You permitted me to remember You.

Ve izâ şekertüke, feleyse’l-fadlü fî şükrî, bel’l-fadlü enneke eykazte fi’l-kalbi ma‘rifete’n-ni‘meh.

And when I thank You, the merit is not in my thanks; rather, the merit is that You awakened in the heart the recognition of the blessing.

Ve izâ kultü: el-hamdü lillâh, feleyse’l-hamdü minnî istiklâlen, bel ente’llezî fetahte bâbe’l-hamd, ve ente’llezî cealte’l-kalbe yecidü fi’l-hamdi râhah, ve ente’llezî cealte’z-zikra hayâten fi’l-bedeni ve’r-rûh.

And when I say, “Praise be to God,” the praise is not from me independently; rather, You are the One who opened the door of praise, You are the One who made the heart find rest in praise, and You are the One who made remembrance a life in the body and the spirit.

Elâ bizikri’llâhi tatmainnü’l-kulûb.

“Truly, in the remembrance of God do hearts find rest.” (ar-Ra‘d, 28)

And we, O my Lord, have found it. We did not merely read it; rather, we found its trace in the breast. We found it in a stillness that descends after agitation; in a serenity that comes after asking; and in a light that enters the heart when it says: “Praise be to God, and to God belongs all praise.”

Fesübhânek. Zikruke leyse kelimeten temürru ale’l-lisân. Zikruke rûhun tuâdü ile’l-kalb. Zikruke mâün alâ nâri’l-havf. Zikruke sekînetün alâ mevdıı’l-curh. Zikruke hayâtün hîne tedîku’l-esbâb.

Glory be to You. Your remembrance is not a word that passes over the tongue. Your remembrance is a spirit returned to the heart. Your remembrance is water upon the fire of fear. Your remembrance is a tranquillity upon the place of the wound. Your remembrance is a life when the causes grow narrow.

Sümme inneke yâ Rabb veadte, ve va‘düke’l-hakk:

Then You, O my Lord, made a promise — and Your promise is the truth:

Lein şekertüm leezîdenneküm.

“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.” (Ibrâhîm, 7)

Femin keramike en tu‘tıye’n-ni‘meh. Sümme tu‘tî ma‘rifete’n-ni‘meh. Sümme tu‘ti’ş-şükra ale’n-ni‘meh. Sümme tec‘alü’ş-şükra sebeben liziyâdeti’n-ni‘meh.

It is of Your generosity that You give the blessing. Then You give the recognition of the blessing. Then You give the thanks for the blessing. Then You make the thanks itself a cause for the increase of the blessing.

Feeyyü keramin hâzâ? Ve eyyü fadlin hâzâ? Ve eyyü bâbin hâzâ?

What generosity is this? What bounty is this? What a door is this?

El-abdü yeşküru bini‘metin minke, fetezîdühû bini‘metin uhrâ minke. El-abdü yahmedü bitevfîkın minke, feteftehu lehû bâben âhara mine’l-fehm. El-abdü yekûl: hâzâ min fadli rabbî, fetuallimühû enne ru’yete’l-fadli fadlün âhar.

The servant gives thanks by a blessing from You, so You increase him by another blessing from You. The servant praises by a success granted from You, so You open for him another door of understanding. The servant says, “This is from the bounty of my Lord,” so You teach him that the very seeing of the bounty is yet another bounty.

Hâzâ min fadli rabbî.

“This is from the bounty of my Lord.” (an-Naml, 40)

Ve hâkezâ yenbeğî li’l-kalbi izâ raâ. Lâ yekûl: hâzâ min zekâî. Ve lâ yekûl: hâzâ min hîletî. Ve lâ yekûl: hâzâ min kuvvetî. Ve lâ yekûl: ene rattebtü, ve ene fehimtü, ve ene keşeftü.

And thus should the heart be when it sees. It does not say, “This is from my cleverness.” It does not say, “This is from my scheming.” It does not say, “This is from my strength.” It does not say, “I arranged, and I understood, and I disclosed.”

Bel yekûl: hâzâ min fadli rabbî. Hâzâ min lutfi rabbî. Hâzâ min setri rabbî. Hâzâ min cevâbi rabbî. Hâzâ min ta‘lîmi rabbî. Hâzâ min hıfzı rabbî.

Rather, it says: This is from the bounty of my Lord. This is from the subtle kindness of my Lord. This is from the covering of my Lord. This is from the answer of my Lord. This is from the teaching of my Lord. This is from the protection of my Lord.

Yâ Rabb, lâ tec‘alnâ mine’llezîne izâ u‘tû nesebü’l-atâe ilâ enfüsihim. Ve lâ mine’llezîne izâ fütiha lehümü’l-bâbü nesü’l-fâtih. Ve lâ mine’llezîne izâ nüccû nesü’l-müneccî. Ve lâ mine’llezîne izâ küşife lehüm kâlû: nahnu raeynâ.

O my Lord, do not make us among those who, when given, ascribe the gift to themselves; nor among those who, when the door is opened for them, forget the Opener; nor among those who, when delivered, forget the Deliverer; nor among those who, when something is disclosed to them, say, “We saw it.”

Bel’c‘alnâ mine’llezîne izâ raev kâlû: erâne’llâh. Ve izâ fehimû kâlû: fehhemene’llâh. Ve izâ hufizû kâlû: hafızane’llâh. Ve izâ ücîbû kâlû: ecâbene’llâh. Ve izâ ketebû kâlû: elhemene’llâh.

Rather, make us among those who, when they see, say, “God showed us.” When they understand, say, “God made us understand.” When they are protected, say, “God protected us.” When they are answered, say, “God answered us.” And when they write, say, “God inspired us.”

Feinne’l-kitâbete eydan bâbün min ebvâbi’l-kader.

For writing, too, is one of the doors of divine decree.

Kad yezunnü’l-abdü ennehû yektübü liyeşraha mâ vakaa, ve’l-hakku enne’llâhe kad yec‘alü’l-kitâbete cüz’en min temâmi’l-fehm.

The servant may suppose that he writes to explain what has happened; but the truth is that God may make the writing a part of the completion of understanding.

Yektübü’l-abdü, feyettedıhu lehû mâ lem yekün vâdıhan kable’l-kitâbeh. Yektübü, feyehdeü kalbüh. Yektübü, feyera’n-ni‘mete fî mevdıın kâne yezunnühû curhâ. Yektübü, feizâ bi’l-kalemi lâ yentekım, bel yeşhed.

The servant writes, and what was not clear before the writing becomes clear to him. He writes, and his heart grows calm. He writes, and he sees the blessing in a place he had supposed a wound. He writes — and behold, the pen does not take revenge; it bears witness.

And behold, the letter does not quarrel; it praises. And behold, the meaning does not descend toward people; it ascends toward God.

Fe’llâhümme’c‘al kitâbetenâ hamden lâ husûmeh. Ve’c‘al hurûfenâ sücûden lâ intikâmâ. Ve’c‘al meânîyenâ tezkîran lâ teşeffiyâ. Ve’c‘al mâ nektübühû şâhiden alâ lutfik, lâ şâhiden alâ nüfûsinâ.

So, O God, make our writing a praise and not a dispute. Make our letters a prostration and not a revenge. Make our meanings a reminder and not a settling of scores. And make what we write a witness to Your subtle kindness, not a witness to our own selves.

Yâ Rabb, inne min esrâri’l-Kur’âni ennehû lâ yetruku’l-abde inde zâhiri’l-hades, bel yerfeuhû ilâ ma‘ne’l-hades.

O my Lord, among the secrets of the Qur’an is that it does not leave the servant at the outward of the event, but raises him to the meaning of the event.

Feyûsüfü aleyhi’s-selâm lem yera’l-bi’re bi’ren fakat, ve le’s-sicne sicnen fakat, ve le’l-firâka firâkan fakat. Bel sâra küllü zâlike tarîkan ilâ kavlih:

Thus Joseph, peace be upon him, did not see the well as merely a well, nor the prison as merely a prison, nor the separation as merely a separation. Rather, all of that became a road to his words:

İnne rabbî latîfün limâ yeşâ’.

“Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in bringing about what He wills.” (Yûsuf, 100)

Feyâ Rabb, ic‘alnâ nerâ lutfeke fi’l-bi’ri kable’l-kasr, ve fi’l-men‘ı kable’l-atâ, ve fi’t-te’hîri kable’l-feth, ve fi’l-keşfi kable’r-râhah, ve fi’l-haddi kable’l-emn.

So, O my Lord, make us see Your subtle kindness in the well before the palace, in the withholding before the giving, in the delay before the opening, in the exposure before the ease, and in the limit before the safety.

And do not make us worship the form and forget the meaning; nor worship the cause and forget the Causer; nor halt at the creation and forget the Creator.

Feinne’l-kalbe izâ vakafe inde’n-nâs, dâk. Ve izâ vakafe inde’l-esbâb, ıdtarab. Ve izâ racea ile’llâh, ittesea.

For the heart, when it halts at people, grows narrow. When it halts at the causes, it is agitated. And when it returns to God, it grows wide.

Yâ Rabb, kad raeynâ enneke akrabü min zanninâ, ve esbeku ilâ hâcetinâ min du‘âinâ, ve eltafü binâ min fehminâ, ve a‘lemü bimâ yuslıhunâ minnâ.

O my Lord, we have seen that You are nearer than our thought, quicker to our need than our prayer, gentler with us than our own understanding, and more knowing of what sets us right than we are ourselves.

Fe’c‘al hâze’l-ilme tevâduan lâ ucbâ. Ve’c‘al hâze’l-keşfe hamden lâ kasveh. Ve’c‘al hâze’l-fethe şükran lâ iddiâ. Ve’c‘al hâze’l-hıfza kurben minke lâ şuûran bi’l-emni min mekri’n-nefs.

So make this knowledge a humility, not a conceit. Make this disclosure a praise, not a hardness. Make this opening a thankfulness, not a claim. And make this protection a nearness to You, not a sense of safety from the scheming of the self.

O my Lord, You know what is in the heart before the tongue utters it. You know what we conceal and what we reveal. You know what we know of ourselves and what we do not. You know our truthfulness and our weakness, our fear and our hope, what we wish to be, and what we are unable to be except through You.

So here we stand before You without any veil. We cannot conceal anything from You. Nor do we wish to conceal anything from You. For concealment from You is impossible, and truthfulness with You is deliverance.

Allâhümme in raeyte fî kulûbinâ taleben sâdikan, fezekkih. Ve in raeyte fîhâ ıvecen, fekavvimh. Ve in raeyte fîhâ riyâen, fetahhirh. Ve in raeyte fîhâ hubben leke, fezidhü ve sebbithü ve lâ tenzı‘h.

O God, if You see in our hearts a truthful seeking, purify it. If You see in them a crookedness, straighten it. If You see in them any showing-off, cleanse it. And if You see in them a love for You, increase it, make it firm, and do not take it away.

Yâ Rabb, inneke kad tuallimü’l-abde mâ lem yekün ya‘lem. Ve kad türîhi mâ lem yekün yerâ. Ve kad tec‘alü fî kalbihî fürkânen yümeyyizü bihî beyne bâbin ve bâb, ve beyne sıdkın ve hîleh, ve beyne emânetin ve ğanîmeh, ve beyne sebebin yenfeu ve sebebin yaktau ank.

O my Lord, You may teach the servant what he did not know. You may show him what he did not see. You may place in his heart a criterion by which he distinguishes between one door and another, between sincerity and cunning, between a trust and a spoil, and between a cause that benefits and a cause that cuts him off from You.

İn tetteku’llâhe yec‘al leküm fürkânâ.

“If you are mindful of God, He will grant you a criterion.” (al-Anfâl, 29)

Fe’c‘al lenâ yâ Rabb fürkânen min indik. Fürkânen lâ kibra fîh. Ve lâ zulme fîh. Ve lâ da‘vâ fîh. Ve lâ hukme ale’l-ğaybi fîh.

So grant us, O my Lord, a criterion from Yourself. A criterion with no arrogance in it; no injustice in it; no self-claim in it; and no judgement over the unseen in it.

Fürkânen yahfezunâ ve lâ yutğînâ. Yübassırunâ ve lâ yükassînâ. Yuallimünâ ve lâ yec‘alünâ nahtekıru ibâdek. Yükîmü’l-hudûde ve lâ yutfiü’r-rahmeh.

A criterion that protects us without making us transgress; that gives us sight without hardening us; that teaches us without making us despise Your servants; that upholds the limits without extinguishing mercy.

Feinne’l-ğaybe lek, ve’l-kulûbe beyne yedeyk, ve’l-hukme ileyk, ve’l-abdü innemâ yerâ mâ eraytehû, ve yefhemü mâ efhemtehû, ve yedıllü in teraktehû ilâ nefsih.

For the unseen is Yours, the hearts are in Your hand, the judgement is Yours; and the servant sees only what You have shown him, understands only what You have made him understand, and goes astray if You leave him to himself.

Allâhümme lâ tec‘al mâ nerâhü sebeben li’l-kibr. Ve lâ tec‘al mâ nefhemühû sebeben li’l-kasveh. Ve lâ tec‘al mâ yükşefü lenâ sebeben li’ş-şemâteh. Ve’c‘al külle keşfin yezîdünâ hamdâ. Ve külle fehmin yezîdünâ edebâ. Ve külle necâtin tezîdünâ kurbâ. Ve külle haddin yezîdünâ adlâ.

O God, do not make what we see a cause for arrogance. Do not make what we understand a cause for hardness. Do not make what is disclosed to us a cause for gloating. And make every disclosure increase us in praise; every understanding increase us in courtesy; every deliverance increase us in nearness; and every limit increase us in justice.

Yâ Rabb, inne ni‘ameke lâ tuhsâ.

O my Lord, Your blessings cannot be counted.

Ve in teuddû ni‘mete’llâhi lâ tuhsûhâ.

“And if you were to count the favour of God, you could not enumerate it.” (Ibrâhîm, 34)

So we cannot count Your blessings. We cannot reckon what You have given. We cannot encompass what You have warded off. We do not know how much evil You have turned away, nor how many a door You have shut out of mercy, nor how many a matter You have covered out of kindness, nor how many a prayer You have answered before we even knew how to pray.

So praise is Yours for what we knew of Your blessings, and praise is Yours for what we did not know. Praise is Yours for what we saw, and praise is Yours for what was hidden from us. Praise is Yours for what You gave, and praise is Yours for what You withheld. Praise is Yours for what You drew near, and praise is Yours for what You turned away. Praise is Yours until You are pleased; praise is Yours when You are pleased; praise is Yours after the pleasure; and praise is Yours because You are the One worthy of all praise.

Yâ Rabb, ic‘al külle sebebin yedüllü aleynâ ileyk, ve lâ tec‘alnâ nekıfü inde’s-sebebi dûnek.

O my Lord, make every cause a sign that points us toward You, and do not make us halt at the cause short of You.

Feinne’l-mir’âte in azharet, fe’n-nûru mink. Ve in ecâbet, fe’l-fethu mink. Ve in akeset, fe’l-vichetü ileyk.

For if the mirror reveals, the light is from You. If it answers, the opening is from You. If it reflects, the true direction is toward You.

Do not make us worship the mirror and forget the sun. Do not make us halt at the instrument and forget the Bestower. Do not make us see understanding in the creature and forget that it is You who gives understanding to whom You will, by what You will.

Allâhümme’c‘al külle mir’âtin sebeben lâ hicâbâ. Ve’c‘al külle kelimetin bâben lâ cidârâ. Ve’c‘al külle fehmin avdeten ileyke lâ vukûfen inde ğayrik.

O God, make every mirror a cause and not a veil. Make every word a door and not a wall. And make every understanding a return to You, not a halting at other than You.

O God, we seek refuge in You from a heart that sees the sign and then takes no heed; from an eye that sees the ordering and then ascribes it to coincidence; from a tongue that praises You and then turns toward itself; and from a pen that writes of You and then seeks its own share from people.

Allâhümme’c‘alnâ min ehli’l-hamd. Ve min ehli’ş-şükr. Ve min ehli’z-zikr. Ve min ehli’t-teslîm. Ve mine’llezîne izâ raev kâlû: sübhâna’llâh. Ve izâ fehimû kâlû: el-hamdü lillâh. Ve izâ hâfû kâlû: hasbüna’llâhü ve ni‘me’l-vekîl. Ve izâ inkeşefe lehümü’l-emru kâlû: el-emru küllühû lillâh.

O God, make us among the people of praise, the people of thanks, the people of remembrance, and the people of surrender; among those who, when they see, say, “Glory be to God”; when they understand, say, “Praise be to God”; when they fear, say, “God is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs”; and when the matter is unveiled to them, say, “The whole affair belongs to God.”

O God, send blessings, peace, and grace upon our master Muhammad — who taught us to return to You in every matter, to be content with You as Lord, to see You behind every cause, and to make the end of the road a praise.

Hasbünallâhü ve ni‘me’l-vekîl. Ni‘me’l-mevlâ ve ni‘me’n-nasîr.

God is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs. What an excellent Master, and what an excellent Helper.
