Shake Toward Yourself
The Fruit Is from God, the Shaking from the Servant
From «shake toward yourself the trunk of the palm»: the fruit is from God, the shaking from the servant; the servant acts as an act of courtesy, not as though the cause were from him — and at every fruit that falls: «this is from the bounty of my Lord». The Arabic original with transliteration and English translation.
Bismillâhi’r-rahmâni’r-rahîm
In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful.
Ve’l-hamdü lillâh, ve lillâhi’l-hamd.
And praise belongs to God; and to God alone belongs all praise.
Yâ Rabb, allemtenâ enne’s-semere leyse mine’l-yed, ve innema’l-yedü tü’meru en tehüzz. Ve allemtenâ enne’r-rızka leyse mine’l-hareket, ve innema’l-hareketü bâbü edebin beyne’l-abdi ve rabbih. Ve allemtenâ enne’n-nahlete lâ tu‘tî lienne’l-abde kaviyy, bel lienna’llâhe emerahâ en tu‘tî.
O my Lord, You taught us that the fruit is not from the hand; the hand is only commanded to shake. You taught us that provision is not from the movement; the movement is only a door of courtesy between the servant and his Lord. And You taught us that the palm does not give because the servant is strong, but because God commanded it to give.
Feizâ hezeznâ, feleyse’l-fadlü li’l-hezz. Ve izâ sekata’s-semer, feleyse’l-mecdü li’l-yed. Ve izâ ekele’l-kalbü mine’r-rızk, feleyse’l-hamdü illâ lillâh.
So if we shake, the merit is not for the shaking. If the fruit falls, the glory is not for the hand. And if the heart eats of the provision, the praise is for none but God.
Ve hüzzî ileyki bicız‘ı’n-nahleti tüsâkıt aleyki rutaben ceniyyâ.
“And shake toward yourself the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.” (Maryam, 25)
Yâ Rabb, mâ a‘cebe emrek.
O my Lord, how wondrous is Your affair.
Te’muru’d-da‘fe en yehüzz. Ve te’muru’l-cız‘a en yüsmir. Ve tec‘alü’l-harekete’s-sağîrete bâben li’r-rızkı’l-kebîr.
You command weakness to shake. You command the trunk to bear fruit. And You make the small movement a door to great provision.
Fe’l-abdü lâ yahluku’s-semer. Ve lâ yünzilü’r-rutab. Ve lâ yemlikü sirra’n-nüdc.
For the servant does not create the fruit. He does not send down the dates. He does not possess the secret of ripening.
İnnemâ yemüddü yedehû tâaten. Ve yehüzzü imtisâlen. Ve yentazıru fadlen. Feizâ sekata’s-semeru kâl:
He only extends his hand in obedience, shakes in compliance, and awaits a bounty. Then, when the fruit falls, he says:
Hâzâ min fadli rabbî.
“This is from the bounty of my Lord.” (an-Naml, 40)
Yâ Rabb, in kâne fi’l-kalbi cız‘un yâbis, feente tuhricü minhü’r-rutabe’l-ceniyy. Ve in kâne fi’s-sadri teab, feente tec‘alü’t-teabe bâbe vilâdeh. Ve in kâne fi’t-tarîkı vahşeh, feente tec‘alü’l-vahşete mevdıa nidâ’. Ve in kâne fi’l-abdi acz, feente tec‘alü’l-acze bâbe kerâmeh.
O my Lord, if there is a dry trunk in the heart, You bring forth from it ripe, fresh dates. If there is weariness in the breast, You make the weariness a door of birth. If there is desolation on the road, You make the desolation a place of calling upon You. And if there is incapacity in the servant, You make the incapacity a door of honour.
Fesübhâne men lâ yahtâcü ilâ kuvveti’l-abd, ve lâkinnehû yühıbbü mine’l-abdi sıdka’t-teveccüh.
Glory be to the One who has no need of the servant’s strength, yet loves from the servant the sincerity of turning toward Him.
Glory be to the One whom it does not incapacitate to drop the fruit without any shaking, yet who teaches the servant that courtesy is to move by His command, not to stand and watch His giving as a spectator.
Yâ Rabb, ic‘al lenâ min külli dîkın nahleh. Ve min külli sükûnin emrâ. Ve min külli elemin semereh. Ve min külli intizârin rızkâ. Ve min külli hezzetin hamdâ.
O my Lord, make for us out of every constriction a palm tree; out of every stillness a command; out of every pain a fruit; out of every waiting a provision; and out of every shaking a praise.
Ve lâ tec‘alnâ izâ sekata’s-semeru nekûl: nahnu hezeznâ. Bel’c‘alnâ nekûl:
And do not make us, when the fruit falls, say, “We shook it.” Rather make us say:
Ente emert. Ve ente endact. Ve ente eskatt. Ve ente et‘amt. Ve ente setert. Ve ente kefeyt.
You commanded. You ripened. You made it fall. You fed. You covered. You sufficed.
Yâ Rabb, izâ emertenâ en nehüzz, feharriknâ bik. Ve izâ eskatte’s-semer, fahfaznâ min ru’yetihî lienfüsinâ. Ve izâ et‘amtenâ, felâ tec‘ali’r-rızka hicâben ani’r-Râzık. Ve izâ ahracte minnâ eseran, felâ tec‘ali’l-esera fitneten lenâ.
O my Lord, when You command us to shake, move us through You. When You make the fruit fall, protect us from ascribing it to ourselves. When You feed us, do not make the provision a veil from the Provider. And when You bring forth from us a trace, do not make the trace a trial for us.
İc‘ali’l-amele tâah. Ve’c‘ali’s-semere ni‘meh. Ve’c‘ali’n-ni‘mete şükrâ. Ve’c‘ali’ş-şükra hamdâ. Ve’c‘ali’l-hamde rucûan ileyk.
Make the action an obedience. Make the fruit a blessing. Make the blessing a thankfulness. Make the thankfulness a praise. And make the praise a return unto You.
Hasbünallâhü ve ni‘me’l-vekîl. Ni‘me’l-mevlâ ve ni‘me’n-nasîr.
God is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs. What an excellent Master, and what an excellent Helper.
