The Book and the Hour

Strength, Insight, and Praise

Eight gates and a conclusion — from the verse «O Yaḥyā, take the Book with strength»: the adab of power, that wisdom breed no conceit, insight no cruelty, tenderness no loss; to know the number, the hour, the correspondence as a door yet not to take them as a lord; after completion, not a claim but praise. With the Arabic original, transliteration, and English translation.

Bismillâhi’r-rahmâni’r-rahîm

In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Ever-Merciful.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî lâ yedîu indehû hafiyy, ve lâ yeğîbü anhü mektûm, ve lâ teltebisü aleyhi’n-niyyâtü izâ tezeyyenet bi’l-elfâz, ve lâ tuhfâ aleyhi’l-hakâiku izâ isteterat bisiyâbi’d-deâvâ.

Praise be to Allah, with whom no secret is lost, from whom nothing concealed is absent, upon whom intentions never grow confused when adorned with words, and from whom realities are never hidden when they cloak themselves in the garments of pretension.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî yeftehu liabdihî bâben min haysü lâ yahtesib, ve yukîmü lehû mine’s-sâati şâhidâ, ve mine’l-kitâbi mir’âten, ve mine’l-ameli mîzânâ, hattâ izâ zanne’l-abdü ennehû yektübü cevâben, vecede enne’l-cevâbe yektübüh, ve izâ zanne ennehû yadbitu mevkıfen, vecede enne’l-mevkıfe yadbituh, ve izâ zanne ennehe’htâra’l-vakte, raâ enne’l-vakte’htîra leh.

Praise be to Allah, who opens for His servant a door from where he does not reckon, and raises for him from the hour a witness, from the book a mirror, from the deed a balance — so that when the servant supposes he is writing an answer, he finds the answer is writing him; when he supposes he is steadying a situation, he finds the situation is steadying him; and when he supposes he chose the time, he sees that the time was chosen for him.

And blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad — the light that pointed to the Light, the servant whose every affair was for Allah, and the beloved who taught hearts that servitude is an honor, that truth is a mercy, that strength, when it parts from adab, becomes a trial, and when it clothes itself in tenderness, becomes a trust.

Emmâ ba‘d; feinne li’l-abdi sââtin lâ yemlikühâ, ve lâkinnehâ temlikühû bimanâhâ. Ve lehû işârâtün lâ yasneuhâ, ve lâkinnehû izâ sadeka fî talebi’l-hakkı sunia bihâ. Ve lehû kelimâtün yezunnühâ hâriceten min yedih, sümme yerâ ba‘de hînin ennehâ kânet hâriceten min tedbîrin a‘zame min yedih, ve evsea min kasdih, ve erhame min hisâbih.

To proceed: the servant has hours he does not own, yet they own him by their meaning. He has signs he does not make, yet if he is truthful in seeking the truth, he is worked through them. He has words he thinks came out of his hand, then sees after a while that they came from a governance greater than his hand, wider than his intent, and more merciful than his reckoning.

Ve mâ kâne’l-abdü liyekûle: ene rettebtü. Ve lâ: ene beleğtü. Ve lâ: ene keşeftü. Ve lâkinnehû yekûlü, ve hüve yutatıu kalbehû kable ra’sih:

The servant is not one to say: I arranged. Nor: I attained. Nor: I unveiled. Rather he says, bowing his heart before his head:

Lem ahteri’s-sâate, ve lâkinne’s-sâate’htîret lî. Ve lem eftehi’l-ma‘nâ, ve lâkinne’l-ma‘nâ fütiha aleyy. Ve lem uhıt bi’s-sirri, ve lâkinne’s-sirre messe kalbî messâ.

I did not choose the hour, but the hour was chosen for me. I did not open the meaning, but the meaning was opened upon me. I did not encompass the secret, but the secret touched my heart with a touch.

Feyâ sübhâne men yec‘alü’r-rakme bâben ve lâ yec‘alühû rabbâ, ve yec‘alü’s-sâate şâhiden ve lâ yec‘alühâ ma‘bûdâ, ve yec‘alü’t-tenâsübe mev‘ızaten ve lâ yec‘alühû gâyeh.

Glory, then, to Him who makes the number a door and does not make it a lord; who makes the hour a witness and does not make it an object of worship; who makes the correspondence an admonition and does not make it an end.

Fe’r-rakmü lâ yehdî, ve’s-sâatü lâ tüncî, ve’t-tevâfuku lâ yahluku nûran min zâtih; ve lâkinne’llâhe yehdî bimâ şâe, ve yeftehu bimâ şâe, ve yûkızu kalbe abdihî bimâ şâe.

For the number does not guide, the hour does not save, and coincidence creates no light of its own; but Allah guides by what He wills, opens by what He wills, and awakens His servant’s heart by what He wills.

The First Gate

Take the Book with Strength

Yâ Yahyâ huzi’l-kitâbe bikuvveh, ve âteynâhü’l-hukme sabiyyâ. Ve hanânen min ledünnâ ve zekâh, ve kâne takıyyâ. Ve berran bivâlideyhi ve lem yekün cebbâran asıyyâ.

“O Yaḥyā, take the Book with strength. And We gave him wisdom while yet a child, and tenderness from Us, and purity; and he was God-fearing, and devoted to his parents, and he was neither a tyrant nor rebellious.” (Maryam 19:12–14)

Hâzihi’l-âyâtü leyset emran âbiran likalbin âbir. İnnehâ mîzânün kâmil: kuvvetün, ve hukm, ve hanân, ve zekâh, ve takvâ, ve birr, ve nefyün li’l-ceberût.

These verses are no passing command to a passing heart. They are a complete balance: strength, and wisdom, and tenderness, and purity, and God-fearing, and filial devotion, and the negation of tyranny.

Ve keenne’n-nidâe yekûlü li’l-abd: huzi’l-kitâbe bikuvveh, ve lâkin lâ te’huzhü litakhera bihi’l-halk. Huzhü litakhera bihî vehme nefsik, ve terudde bihî gafletek, ve tahfeza bihî emânetek, ve tümeyyize bihî beyne mâ yükâlü ve mâ yürâd, ve beyne mâ yüsemmâ ve mâ hüve kâin, ve beyne sûrati’l-hakkı ve hakîkatih.

It is as though the call says to the servant: Take the Book with strength — but do not take it to subdue people with it. Take it to subdue the illusion of your own self, to repel your heedlessness, to guard your trust, and to discern by it between what is said and what is meant, between what is named and what actually is, and between the image of the truth and its reality.

Feleyse’l-kitâbü verakan fakat, ve lâ hıbran fakat, ve lâ lafzan yütlâ sümme yütrekü eseruhû inde hudûdi’l-lisân. El-kitâbü ahd. Ve’l-kitâbü hadd. Ve’l-kitâbü şâhid. Ve’l-kitâbü mîzân. Ve’l-kitâbü tarîkun izâ humile biedeb, ve hicâbün izâ humile bi’l-ucb.

The Book is not paper alone, nor ink alone, nor a word recited and then left with its trace at the borders of the tongue. The Book is a covenant. The Book is a limit. The Book is a witness. The Book is a balance. The Book is a path when it is carried with adab, and a veil when it is carried with conceit.

Ve kad yü’te’l-abdü bâben min ebvâbi’l-beyân, fein kâne lillâh, sâra’l-beyânü nûrâ, ve in kâne li’n-nefs, sâra’l-beyânü seyfen a‘mâ. Ve kad yü’tâ kuvveten fi’l-kelimeh, fein sâhabehe’l-hanânü sârat rahmeh, ve in fârakahe’l-hanânü sârat kasveh.

The servant may be granted one of the gates of eloquence: if it is for Allah, the eloquence becomes a light; if it is for the self, the eloquence becomes a blind sword. He may be granted strength in the word: if tenderness accompanies it, it becomes mercy; if tenderness departs from it, it becomes cruelty.

The strength Allah wants is not shouting. The wisdom Allah bestows is not haughtiness. The limit upheld for Allah is not vengeance. Rather it is a servant standing at the place of trust: unwilling to wrong, unwilling to be used for other than the truth, unwilling to make his good opinion a commodity, or the name of his people a path for one who does not know the worth of names.

The Second Gate

Wisdom While Still a Child

Glory to Him who does not confine understanding within the years, nor make wisdom an endowment of grey hair, nor weigh hearts by people’s titles, nor make history a proof against the truth.

Kad yekûnü’l-mer’ü sağîran fî ayni kavm, ve lâkinne’llâhe yeftehu lehû mine’l-hukmi mâ lâ yüftehu limen tâle makâmühû beyne’l-cüdrân. Ve kad yekûnü cedîden alâ mâideh, ve lâkinnehû yerâ mâ lem yerahü ehlü’l-mâideti liennehüm elifû sûratehâ. Ve kad ye’tî min baîd, feyekşifü’llâhü lehû enne’l-baîde ahyânen yere’l-hatta kâmilâ, ve’l-karîbe lâ yerâ illâ’n-noktate’lletî‘tâdehâ.

A person may be small in the eyes of a people, yet Allah opens for him of wisdom what is not opened for one whose standing has lengthened between the walls. He may be new to a table, yet he sees what the people of the table did not see, because they grew accustomed to its form. He may come from afar, and Allah unveils to him that the distant one sometimes sees the whole line, while the near one sees only the point he has grown used to.

Wisdom is not that the servant overcomes his opponent. Wisdom is that he overcomes his own self before his opponent. Wisdom is to call a thing by its name without excess. Wisdom is to say: this is true, even if it be against my desire; and to say: this does not stand straight, even if people adorned it with a thousand phrases.

Feizâ rae’l-abdü sûraten tüsemmâ bigayri’smihâ, lem yekün mine’l-edebi en yübârike’l-iltibâs. Ve izâ raâ bâben yüftehu lehû liyekûne tarîkan ligayrihî dûne ahdin yahfezuh, lem yekün mine’t-tevâdui en yedhulehû muğmeda’l-ayneyn. Ve izâ raâ enne’l-kîmete’lletî seyahlukuhâ tübâu lehû kable en yahlukahâ, lem yekün mine’l-hikmeti en yeşteriye min nefsihî müstakbeleh.

If the servant sees a form named by other than its name, it is not from adab to bless the confusion. If he sees a door opened for him so that it becomes a path for another without a covenant that keeps him, it is not from humility to enter it with closed eyes. If he sees that the value he will create is being sold to him before he creates it, it is not from wisdom to buy his own future from himself.

Wisdom is to stand where standing is due. Wisdom is to depart where departing is purer. Wisdom is not to make people’s need for his giving a cause for his pride, nor his need for their door a cause for his humiliation.

Yâ Rabbi, in vehebtenâ hukmen, fec‘alhü aleyke dâllen lâ aleynâ. Ve in fetahte lenâ beyânen, fec‘alhü rahmeten lâ satveh. Ve in eraytenâ mâ hafiye alâ gayrinâ, felâ tec‘al ru’yetenâ fitneten lenâ, ve lâ sebeben linisyâni fakrinâ ileyk.

O Lord — if You have bestowed on us wisdom, make it point to You, not to us. If You have opened for us eloquence, make it a mercy, not a force. If You have shown us what was hidden from others, do not make our seeing a trial for us, nor a cause to forget our poverty before You.

The Third Gate

Tenderness from Us

Strength is not complete unless it is washed with tenderness. And tenderness is not sound unless it is guarded by purity. For tenderness is not weakness, and purity is not an ornament for the outward — rather it is the purifying of strength from oppression, of the tongue from gloating, of silence from cowardice, and of the reply from vengeance.

How many a word the servant is able to say, yet Allah withholds him from it, as a mercy to him before others. How many a weapon he possesses, yet refuses to draw it, because a victory once polluted becomes another defeat. How many a place where he is able to embarrass, yet he chooses clarification over exposure, the limit over insult, and departure over breaking.

This is the tenderness that is from Allah: that the eye remain tearful even if the situation hardens, that the heart remain remembering even if the hand becomes firm, and that the servant not forget that those to whom he replies are servants of Allah, and that Allah has more power over him than they have over him.

Feyâ Rabbi, ic‘al fî kuvvetinâ hanânâ, ve fî hanâninâ tahâreh, ve fî tahâratinâ takvâ, ve fî takvânâ setrâ, ve fî setrinâ hamdâ.

O Lord — place in our strength a tenderness, in our tenderness a purity, in our purity a God-fearing, in our God-fearing a covering, and in our covering a praise.

The Fourth Gate

Devoted to His Parents

The servant has a name he carries, but the name is not his alone. In it is a mother’s prayer, a father’s toil, a home’s covering, years the strangers do not know, hands that lifted him before he knew how to walk, and hearts that prayed for him before he knew how to pray.

Feizâ dehale’l-abdü mâideh, dehale bismih, ve dehale meahû zıllü ehlih. Ve izâ tekelleme, lem yekün lisânühû vahdehû fi’l-meclis, bel kâne meahû edebü beytih, ve vekâru ebîh, ve duâü ümmih, ve mîrâsü men lem yahdurû biecsâdihim ve lâkin hadaret esmâuhüm.

So when the servant enters a gathering, he enters with his name, and with him enters the shadow of his family. When he speaks, his tongue is not alone in the assembly; rather with him is the adab of his house, the dignity of his father, the prayer of his mother, and the inheritance of those who were not present in their bodies, yet whose names were present.

It is of filial devotion that he not lead his family into an ambiguity he is not at ease with. It is of filial devotion that he ask about safety when the matter touches them. It is of filial devotion that he keep for them their place, and not make them an ornament for a table that does not keep the covenant. It is of filial devotion that he be soft of heart, firm of back, knowing that forbearance in his own right is one thing, and negligence in the trust of his family is another.

Yâ Rabbi, ic‘al kıyâmenâ liehlinâ birran lâ asabiyyeh, ve hıfzanâ liesmâihim emâneten lâ kibrâ, ve difâanâ an hukûkıhim edeben lâ intikâmâ. Ve lâ tec‘alnâ nüdayyiu mâ hammelûne iyyâhü mine’s-sikati bihüsni zannin fî gayri mevdıih.

O Lord — make our standing for our family a devotion, not partisanship; our guarding of their names a trust, not pride; and our defense of their rights an adab, not vengeance. And do not let us squander the trust they laid upon us through a good opinion placed where it does not belong.

The Fifth Gate

Neither a Tyrant Nor Rebellious

Mâ adyeka’t-tarîka beyne’l-kuvveti ve’l-ceberût, ve mâ edekka’l-hayta beyne’l-haddi ve’l-kasveh, ve mâ esrea mâ yelbisü’l-hevâ sevbe’l-hakk, ve mâ erakka mâ yekûnü’l-kalbü muhtâcen ilâ Rabbihî hîne yezunnü ennehû esâb.

How narrow the path between strength and tyranny; how fine the thread between the limit and cruelty; how swiftly desire puts on the garment of truth; and how delicate is the heart’s need for its Lord at the very moment it supposes it has hit the mark.

Leyse’l-cebbâru men kâle: lâ. Ve lâkinne’l-cebbâre men kâlehâ linefsihî lâ lillâh. Ve leyse’l-kaviyyü men kesera gayrah, ve lâkinne’l-kaviyye men lem yetruk nefsehû teksiruhû sâate’l-gadab. Ve leyse’l-mütevâdiu men dayyea haddeh, ve lâkinne’l-mütevâdia men arafe haddehû ve lem yetecâvezhü ilâ zulmi ehad.

The tyrant is not the one who says: No. The tyrant is the one who says it for his own self, not for Allah. The strong one is not he who breaks another, but he who does not let his own self break him in the hour of anger. The humble one is not he who lost his limit, but he who knew his limit and did not overstep it into wronging anyone.

Fe’l-abdü izâ raâ halelen, kâle bikadri mâ raâ. Ve izâ ağleka bâben, ağlekahû bilâ la‘neh. Ve izâ harace min tarîk, harace bilâ şemâteh. Ve izâ hafiza hakkah, hafiza meahû hakka gayrihî fi’l-kerâmeh.

So when the servant sees a flaw, he speaks to the measure of what he saw. When he closes a door, he closes it without a curse. When he leaves a path, he leaves without gloating. And when he guards his own right, he guards with it the right of others to dignity.

Allâhümme lâ tec‘al hudûdenâ kasveh, ve lâ lînenâ dayââ, ve lâ vudûhanâ kibrâ, ve lâ sükûtenâ havfâ, ve lâ kelâmenâ fitneh.

O Allah — do not make our limits cruelty, nor our gentleness loss, nor our clarity pride, nor our silence fear, nor our speech a trial.

The Sixth Gate

The Turning of the Numbers

Sümme’nkalebeti’l-mir’âh. Kâne’n-nazaru evvelen ilâ: Meryem 19 / 12, 13, 14. Sümme dâra’l-kalbü ilâ: Yûsuf 12 / 19, ve’r-Ra‘d 13 / 19, ve İbrâhîm 14 / 19.

Then the mirror turned. The gaze was first upon: Maryam 19 / 12, 13, 14. Then the heart turned toward: Yūsuf 12 / 19, al-Ra‘d 13 / 19, and Ibrāhīm 14 / 19.

Ve lâkinnehû vukûfü kalbin inde bâbin fütiha leh, felem yekul: melektü’s-sir, bel kâle: sübhâne men erânî mine’s-sirri mâ yekfînî liahmedehû ve a‘mel.

This is no play with numbers, nor a claim to a knowledge the servant does not possess, nor a worship of correspondences. Rather it is a heart standing at a door that was opened for it — so it did not say: I have owned the secret; it said: Glory to Him who showed me of the secret what suffices me to praise Him and to act.

12:19 — Yūsuf

Ve câet seyyâratün feerselû vâridehüm feedlâ delveh, kâle yâ büşrâ hâzâ gulâm, ve eserrûhü bidâah, va’llâhü alîmün bimâ ya‘melûn.

“And a caravan came, and they sent their water-drawer, and he let down his bucket. He said, ‘Good news! Here is a boy!’ And they concealed him as merchandise. And Allah was aware of what they were doing.” (Yūsuf 12:19)

Kîmetün fi’l-cübb, ve aynün terâhâ bidâah, ve tedbîrün min fevkı’t-tedbîr. Mâ adyeka nazara men yere’l-insâne menfeah, ve lâ yerâ fîhi emâneh. Ve men yere’l-mevhibete tarîkan ilâ maslahatih, ve lâ yerâ enne lisâhibi’l-mevhibeti hakkan ve hurmeh. Ve men yekûlü: yâ büşrâ, sümme yüsirru mâ vecedehû bidâah.

A value in the well, an eye that sees it as merchandise, and a governance above the governance. How narrow the sight of one who sees the human being as a benefit and sees in him no trust; who sees the gift as a path to his own interest and does not see that the owner of the gift has a right and an inviolability; who says, ‘Good news!’ and then conceals what he found as merchandise.

But the end of the verse washes the heart of fear: And Allah is aware of what they do. He knows what is shown and what is hidden, what is said and what is kept silent, what is adorned and what is concealed beneath fine garments. So with Him no servant is lost who saw himself measured by benefit; no stance is lost in which the truth was kept with adab; no departure is lost from a door that could have become a trial.

13:19 — al-Ra‘d

Efemen ya‘lemü ennemâ ünzile ileyke min Rabbike’l-hakku kemen hüve a‘mâ, innemâ yetezekkeru ülü’l-elbâb.

“Is he who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth like one who is blind? Only people of understanding take heed.” (al-Ra‘d 13:19)

Leyse küllü nâzırin basîrâ. Ve leyse küllü sâkitin gâfilâ. Ve leyse küllü müteahhırin âcizâ. Ve leyse küllü müsriin tâişâ. Ve leyse küllü sağîrin sağîran inde’llâh.

Not every one who looks sees. Not every one who is silent is heedless. Not every one who comes late is incapable. Not every one who hastens is reckless. Not every one who is small is small before Allah.

El-basîratü en terâ mevdıa’l-hakkı dâhıle kesreti’l-kelâm. En tere’z-ziyâdete’l-muhtebiete fi’n-naks. Ve’l-hatara’l-muhtebie fi’l-lutf. Ve’l-ahze’l-muhtebie fi’l-atâ. Ve’l-isti‘mâle’l-muhtebie fî lafzı’t-teâvün. Ve’l-basîratü eydan en lâ tazlim. En lâ tec‘ale zanneke hukmâ. En tentazıra’l-beyân. Feizâ câe’l-beyânü, vada‘tehû fi’l-mîzân. Ve izâ’stekâme, kabiltehû. Ve izâ lem yestekim, harecte bilâ dacîc.

Insight is to see the place of truth within the abundance of speech. To see the increase hidden in the deficiency, the danger hidden in the kindness, the taking hidden in the giving, the exploitation hidden in the word ‘cooperation.’ Insight is also not to wrong: not to make your suspicion a verdict; to await the clarification; and when the clarification comes, to place it in the balance; if it stands straight, to accept it; and if it does not, to depart without clamor.

İnnemâ yetezekkeru ülü’l-elbâb. Ve’l-lübbü hüve en lâ ye’huzeke zâhiru’l-kelâmi an bâtınih, ve lâ bâtınü’z-zanni an adlih, ve lâ adlüke an hazmik, ve lâ hazmüke an rahmetik.

‘Only people of understanding take heed.’ And the kernel is this: that the outward of speech not carry you away from its inward, nor the inward of suspicion from its justice, nor your justice from your resolve, nor your resolve from your mercy.

14:19 — Ibrāhīm

Elem tera enne’llâhe halaka’s-semâvâti ve’l-arda bi’l-hakk, in yeşe’ yüzhibküm ve ye’ti bihalkın cedîd.

“Do you not see that Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can take you away and bring a new creation.” (Ibrāhīm 14:19)

Truth is the root of creation. Whatever is not upon truth is a stranger to the root of existence, even if names and numbers and stories multiply around it. Survival is not for the one whose history is long, nor whose house is great, nor whose speech is much, nor who owns the image of power; rather survival is for what Allah wills to survive, and steadfastness for what Allah has established upon truth.

İn yeşe’ yüzhib tertîben ve ye’ti bitertîb. Ve yasrif vechen ve ye’ti bivech. Ve yuğlik bâben ve yeftah bâbâ. Ve yuhric abden min tarîkın zannehû tarîkah, liyüdhilehû fî tarîkın lem yekün yetevakkauh.

If He wills, He removes an arrangement and brings an arrangement; He turns away one face and brings a face; He closes a door and opens a door; and He brings a servant out of a road he thought was his road, in order to enter him into a road he never expected.

O Lord — do not let us cling to a door when You close it, nor make an enemy of a door when You open it, nor suppose that our provision is confined to the hand of any of Your creation. For You are the Creator in truth, and You are the One who changes in truth, and You are the One who remains after the perishing of every arrangement.

The Seventh Gate

The Three Hours

Harececeti’l-kelimetü fî 12:19, ve merret alâ ma‘nâ 13:19, ve vasalet fî ufukın âhare inde 14:19. Felem tekün inde’l-abdi hîleh, ve lâ tedbîrün maksûd, ve lâ intizârün mustana‘. Kâne’l-emru amelâ, sümme sâra şâhidâ. Kâne risâleten, sümme sâra mir’âh. Kâne vakten, sümme sâra bâben ile’l-hamd.

The word went out at 12:19, passed by the meaning of 13:19, and arrived at another horizon at 14:19. There was, on the servant’s part, no trick, no intended contrivance, no manufactured waiting. It was a deed, then it became a witness. It was a message, then it became a mirror. It was a time, then it became a door to praise.

And the servant, when he saw that, did not say: I am the owner of the secret. He said: O Lord, I am too poor to own a moment, too weak to create a correspondence, too little to arrange a meaning. But You had mercy, and so You showed. You were gracious, and so You alerted. You veiled, and so You did not make me stop at the hour apart from the Owner of the hour.

Feleke’l-hamdü alâ mâ zahar, ve leke’l-hamdü alâ mâ hafiye, ve leke’l-hamdü alâ mâ vâfeka’l-kalb, ve leke’l-hamdü alâ mâ kesera’l-vehm, ve leke’l-hamdü alâ mâ ağlakte, ve leke’l-hamdü alâ mâ fetahte.

So Yours is the praise for what appeared, and Yours the praise for what was hidden, and Yours the praise for what agreed with the heart, and Yours the praise for what broke the illusion, and Yours the praise for what You closed, and Yours the praise for what You opened.

The Eighth Gate

When You Are Free, Rise to Toil

Feizâ farağte fensab. Ve ilâ Rabbike fergab.

“So when you have finished, then labor on; and to your Lord direct your longing.” (al-Inshirāḥ 94:7–8)

Unveiling is not a place to sit, but a place to stand. Expansion is not the end of the road, but the beginning of a purer work. And that Allah shows His servant a meaning is not so that the servant becomes a maker of claims, but so that he becomes a person of thanks and service and fear and hope.

Feizâ farağte min cevâb, fensab ilâ amel. Ve izâ farağte min bâb, fensab ilâ bâb. Ve izâ farağte min ma‘nâ, fensab ilâ şükri’l-ma‘nâ. Ve izâ farağte min mevkıfin hafizte fîhi hakkak, fensab ilâ mevkıfin tahfezu fîhi kalbek. Ve izâ farağte mine’n-nâs, felâ tefruğ min Rabbi’n-nâs.

So when you are finished with an answer, rise to a deed. When you are finished with a door, rise to a door. When you are finished with a meaning, rise to thanking the meaning. When you are finished with a stance in which you guarded your right, rise to a stance in which you guard your heart. And when you are finished with people, do not become free of the Lord of people.

For a sign, if it bequeaths no deed, becomes a tale. An indication, if it bequeaths no humility, becomes a trial. An opening, if it bequeaths no servitude, becomes a door to the self. But if the servant says ‘al-hamdu lillāh’ and then rises, and says ‘there is no power nor strength save by Allah’ and then works, and says ‘Allah suffices me and what an excellent Guardian’ and then goes on — what he saw becomes a light, not smoke; a provision, not delusion.

Conclusion

The Prayer of the Book and the Hour

O Allah — O You who said, ‘Take the Book with strength’: teach us to take the truth with strength, and do not make our strength a tyranny.

Allâhümme, âtinâ hukmen lâ yûrisü ucbâ, ve basîraten lâ tûrisü kasveh, ve hanânen lâ yûrisü dayââ, ve zekâten tütahhiru’l-lisâne ve’l-kalbe ve’n-niyyete ve’l-mevkıf.

O Allah — grant us a wisdom that breeds no conceit, an insight that breeds no cruelty, a tenderness that breeds no loss, and a purity that cleanses the tongue and the heart and the intention and the stance.

Allâhümme, ic‘alnâ bârrîne biâbâinâ ve ümmehâtinâ, hâfizîne liemânâti büyûtinâ, lâ nebîu esmâehüm fî mevâidi’l-gafleh, ve lâ nahmilühüm ilâ turukın lâ natmainnü ileyhâ, ve lâ nec‘alü gîratenâ aleyhim kibrâ, ve lâ lînenâ mea’n-nâsi tefrîtâ.

O Allah — make us devoted to our fathers and mothers, keepers of the trusts of our homes, who do not sell their names at the tables of heedlessness, nor carry them onto roads we are not at ease with, nor make our zeal for them a pride, nor our gentleness with people a negligence.

Allâhümme, lâ tec‘alnâ cebbârîne usâh, ve lâ duafâe tüstebâhu hudûduhüm, ve lâ ashâbe kulûbin kâsiyeh, ve lâ ashâbe elsinetin cârihah, ve lâ ashâbe mevâkıfe mülevvesetin bihuzûzi’n-nefs.

O Allah — do not make us tyrants and rebels, nor weaklings whose limits are violated, nor people of hardened hearts, nor people of wounding tongues, nor people of stances polluted with the portions of the self.

Allâhümme, in eraytenâ rakmen, felâ teftinnâ bi’r-rakm. Ve in eraytenâ sâaten, felâ teftinnâ bi’s-sâah. Ve in eraytenâ tenâsüben, felâ teftinnâ bi’t-tenâsüb. Vec‘al külle mâ nerâhü tarîkan ileyk, lâ hicâben beynenâ ve beynek.

O Allah — if You have shown us a number, do not put us to trial by the number. If You have shown us an hour, do not put us to trial by the hour. If You have shown us a correspondence, do not put us to trial by the correspondence. And make everything we see a path to You, not a veil between us and You.

Allâhümme, lâ tekilnâ ilâ enfüsinâ tarfete ayn, ve lâ ekalle min zâlik, ve lâ mikdâra mâ beyne’htizâzetey veterin dakîk. Emsiknâ bik, ve sebbitnâ bik, ve ruddenâ ileyke küllemâ milnâ, ve lâ tec‘alnâ illâ abîden mahfûzîne bilutfik.

O Allah — do not entrust us to ourselves for the blink of an eye, nor for less than that, nor for the measure between the two tremblings of a fine string. Hold us by You, make us firm by You, return us to You whenever we incline, and make us nothing but servants preserved by Your grace.

Allâhümme, in emsektenâ sebetnâ, ve in terektenâ da‘nâ. Ve in fetahte lenâ bâben dehalnâhü bismik, ve in ağlakte annâ bâben hamidnâke alâ setrik. Ve in a‘taytenâ kulnâ: el-hamdü lillâh, ve in mena‘tenâ kulnâ: el-hamdü lillâh, ve in keşefte lenâ kulnâ: el-hamdü lillâh, ve in hacebte annâ kulnâ: el-hamdü lillâh.

O Allah — if You hold us, we stand firm; if You leave us, we are lost. If You open for us a door, we enter it in Your name; if You close a door against us, we praise You for Your covering. If You give us, we say: al-hamdu lillāh; if You withhold from us, we say: al-hamdu lillāh; if You unveil to us, we say: al-hamdu lillāh; and if You veil from us, we say: al-hamdu lillāh.

Allâhümme, ic‘alnâ mimmen izâ farağa nasab, ve izâ nasabe rağib, ve izâ rağibe kasedeke vahdek, ve izâ kasedeke lem yeltefit ilâ gayrike illâ edeben ve rahmeten ve edâen li’l-hakk.

O Allah — make us among those who, when they are free, labor; and when they labor, long; and when they long, intend You alone; and when they intend You, do not turn to any other except out of adab, and mercy, and the discharging of a right.

Hasbünallâhü ve ni‘me’l-vekîl. Ni‘me’l-mevlâ ve ni‘me’n-nasîr.

Allah is sufficient for us, and what an excellent Guardian. What an excellent Master and what an excellent Helper.

Ve sallâ’llâhü alâ seyyidinâ Muhammed, ve alâ âlihî ve sahbihî ve selleme teslîmen kesîrâ.

And may Allah send blessings upon our master Muhammad, and upon his family and companions, and grant them abundant peace.
