رِسَالَةُ الْأَمَانَةِ وَالْوَكَالَةِ

وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ، وَلِلّٰهِ الْحَمْدُ.

Ve’l-hamdü lillâh, ve lillâhi’l-hamd.

And praise belongs to God; and to God alone belongs all praise.

الحمدُ للهِ الَّذي يُعطي النعمة، ثم لا يتركُ العبدَ وحدهُ تحتَ ثِقَلِها.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî yu‘ti’n-ni‘meh, sümme lâ yetrukü’l-abde vahdehû tahte sikalihâ.

Praise belongs to God, who gives the blessing, then does not leave the servant alone beneath its weight.

الحمدُ للهِ الَّذي يُكرم، ثم يُعينُ على شكرِ الكرامة.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî yükrim, sümme yuînü alâ şükri’l-kerâmeh.

Praise belongs to God, who honours, then helps toward the thanks for the honour.

الحمدُ للهِ الَّذي يفتحُ، ثم يحفظُ القلبَ من أن يضيعَ في الفتح.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî yeftehu, sümme yahfezu’l-kalbe min en yedîa fi’l-feth.

Praise belongs to God, who opens, then protects the heart from being lost within the opening.

الحمدُ للهِ الَّذي يُحمّلُ الأمانة، ثم يكونُ هو الوكيلَ عليها، والمولى فيها، والنصيرَ بها.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî yühammilü’l-emâneh, sümme yekûnü hüve’l-vekîle aleyhâ, ve’l-mevlâ fîhâ, ve’n-nasîra bihâ.

Praise belongs to God, who lays on the trust, then is Himself its Disposer, its Master, and the Helper by it.

يا ربّ، إنَّ نعمكَ عظيمة، وأماناتكَ جليلة، والعبدُ ضعيفٌ بين يديك.

Yâ Rabb, inne ni‘ameke azîmeh, ve emânâtike celîleh, ve’l-abdü daîfün beyne yedeyk.

O my Lord, Your blessings are immense, Your trusts are weighty, and the servant is weak before You.

يرى ما أعطيتَه، فيقول: كيف أحمل؟ ويرى ما فتحتَه، فيقول: كيف أثبت؟ ويرى ما علّمتَه، فيقول: كيف لا أضيّع؟ ويرى ما قرّبتَه، فيقول: كيف لا أُحجب؟

Yerâ mâ a‘taytehû, feyekûl: keyfe ahmil? Ve yerâ mâ fetahtehû, feyekûl: keyfe esbüt? Ve yerâ mâ allemtehû, feyekûl: keyfe lâ üdayyi‘? Ve yerâ mâ karrabtehû, feyekûl: keyfe lâ uhceb?

He sees what You gave him and says: how shall I carry it? He sees what You opened for him and says: how shall I hold firm? He sees what You taught him and says: how shall I not squander it? He sees what You drew near and says: how shall I not be veiled?

ثم لا يجدُ ملجأً إلا أن يقول:

Sümme lâ yecidü melceen illâ en yekûl:

Then he finds no refuge but to say:

اللهُ يكفينا. لا قوّتنا تكفينا. ولا فهمُنا يكفينا. ولا قلمُنا يكفينا. ولا قلبُنا يكفينا. ولا صدقُنا يكفينا إن لم تحفظهُ أنت.

Allâhü yekfînâ. Lâ kuvvetünâ tekfînâ. Ve lâ fehmünâ yekfînâ. Ve lâ kalemünâ yekfînâ. Ve lâ kalbünâ yekfînâ. Ve lâ sıdkunâ yekfînâ in lem tahfazhü ent.

God suffices us. Our strength does not suffice us. Our understanding does not suffice us. Our pen does not suffice us. Our heart does not suffice us. And our truthfulness does not suffice us, if You do not protect it.

أنتَ تكفينا يا ربّ.

Ente tekfînâ yâ Rabb.

You suffice us, O my Lord.

أنتَ الوكيلُ إذا كَبُرت الأمانة. وأنتَ المولى إذا ضعفَ العبد. وأنتَ النصيرُ إذا خافَ القلبُ من نفسه. وأنتَ الحافظُ إذا كثُرت النعمُ وخافَ العبدُ من التقصير.

Ente’l-vekîlü izâ kebüreti’l-emâneh. Ve ente’l-mevlâ izâ daüfe’l-abd. Ve ente’n-nasîru izâ hâfe’l-kalbü min nefsih. Ve ente’l-hâfizu izâ kesürati’n-ni‘amü ve hâfe’l-abdü mine’t-taksîr.

You are the Disposer when the trust grows great. You are the Master when the servant grows weak. You are the Helper when the heart fears its own self. You are the Protector when blessings multiply and the servant fears falling short.

يا ربّ، لسنا نخافُ النعمةَ لأنها منك، ولكن نخافُ أن لا نؤدّي حقَّها.

Yâ Rabb, lesnâ nehâfü’n-ni‘mete liennehâ mink, ve lâkin nehâfü en lâ nüeddiye hakkahâ.

O my Lord, we do not fear the blessing because it is from You; but we fear that we may not fulfil its due.

ولسنا نخافُ الطريقَ إذا كنتَ معنا، ولكن نخافُ أن نُتركَ لأنفسنا طرفةَ عين.

Ve lesnâ nehâfü’t-tarîka izâ künte meanâ, ve lâkin nehâfü en nütreke lienfüsinâ tarfete ayn.

And we do not fear the road when You are with us; but we fear being left to ourselves for the blink of an eye.

ولسنا نخافُ الفتحَ إذا كان منك، ولكن نخافُ أن يدخلَ فيه حظُّ النفس، أو دعوى القلب، أو غفلةُ اللسان، أو نسيانُ الشكر.

Ve lesnâ nehâfü’l-fethe izâ kâne mink, ve lâkin nehâfü en yedhule fîhi hazzu’n-nefs, ev da‘ve’l-kalb, ev ğafletü’l-lisân, ev nisyânü’ş-şükr.

And we do not fear the opening when it is from You; but we fear that there may enter into it the self’s portion, or the heart’s claim, or the tongue’s heedlessness, or the forgetting of thanks.

يا ربّ، إنّ العبدَ قد يرى الخوفَ من بعيد، ثم يجدُ عندكَ سكينةً.

Yâ Rabb, inne’l-abde kad yera’l-havfe min baîd, sümme yecidü indeke sekîneh.

O my Lord, the servant may see the fear from afar, then find with You a tranquillity.

وقد يظنّ أنَّ الأمانةَ تُثقلُه، ثم يجدُ أنَّ قولَه: حسبنا الله، يرفعُ عنه ما لا يطيق.

Ve kad yezunnü enne’l-emânete tüskılüh, sümme yecidü enne kavlehû: hasbünallâh, yerfeu anhü mâ lâ yütîk.

And he may suppose that the trust weighs him down, then find that his saying, “God suffices us,” lifts from him what he cannot bear.

وقد يخافُ من المسؤولية، ثم يتذكّرُ أنّ الوكيلَ هو الله.

Ve kad yehâfü mine’l-mes’ûliyyeh, sümme yetezekkerü enne’l-vekîle hüva’llâh.

And he may fear the responsibility, then remember that the Disposer is God.

فإذا كان اللهُ وكيلاً، فليس معنى ذلك أن يتركَ العبدُ العمل، بل أن يعملَ وهو يعلمُ أنَّ العملَ لا يقومُ إلا بالله.

Feizâ kâne’llâhü vekîlen, feleyse ma‘nâ zâlike en yetrüke’l-abdü’l-amel, bel en ya‘mele ve hüve ya‘lemü enne’l-amele lâ yekûmü illâ billâh.

So if God is the Disposer, that does not mean the servant abandons action; rather, that he acts while knowing that the action stands only through God.

وإذا كان اللهُ مولى، فليس معنى ذلك أن يتكبرَ العبدُ بالولاية، بل أن ينكسرَ بين يدي من تولّاه.

Ve izâ kâne’llâhü mevlâ, feleyse ma‘nâ zâlike en yetekebbera’l-abdü bi’l-velâyeh, bel en yenkesira beyne yedey men tevellâh.

And if God is the Master, that does not mean the servant grows proud through the guardianship; rather, that he breaks before the One who took charge of him.

وإذا كان اللهُ نصيرًا، فليس معنى ذلك أن يظلمَ العبدُ أحدًا، بل أن يثبتَ على الحقّ بلا خوفٍ من ضياع.

Ve izâ kâne’llâhü nasîran, feleyse ma‘nâ zâlike en yazlime’l-abdü ehadâ, bel en yesbüte ale’l-hakkı bilâ havfin min dıyâ‘.

And if God is the Helper, that does not mean the servant wrongs anyone; rather, that he holds firm upon the truth without fear of loss.

فنحنُ عبيد. وأنتَ الربّ. نحنُ فقراء. وأنتَ الغنيّ. نحنُ ننسى. وأنتَ لا تنسى. نحنُ نخطئ. وأنتَ تغفر. نحنُ نضعف. وأنتَ تقوّي. نحنُ نضيق. وأنتَ تفتح.

Fenahnu abîd. Ve ente’r-Rabb. Nahnu fukarâ’. Ve ente’l-Ğaniyy. Nahnu nensâ. Ve ente lâ tensâ. Nahnu nuhtı’. Ve ente tağfir. Nahnu nad‘uf. Ve ente tükavvî. Nahnu nedîk. Ve ente teftehu.

For we are servants, and You are the Lord. We are poor, and You are the Rich. We forget, and You do not forget. We err, and You forgive. We grow weak, and You strengthen. We are constrained, and You open wide.

نحنُ لا نعرفُ كيف نحمدُك كما ينبغي، وأنتَ تُعلّمنا الحمدَ ثم تقبلهُ منّا.

Nahnu lâ na‘rifü keyfe nahmedüke kemâ yenbeğî, ve ente tuallimüne’l-hamde sümme takbelühû minnâ.

We do not know how to praise You as befits You, yet You teach us the praise, then accept it from us.

يا ربّ، إنّ من رحمتكَ أنك لم تجعل الدعاءَ بابًا للكاملين فقط، بل جعلتَه بابًا للضعفاء، والخائفين، والناسين، والمخطئين، والذين لا يعرفون كيف يحملون ما أعطيتَهم.

Yâ Rabb, inne min rahmetike enneke lem tec‘ali’d-du‘âe bâben li’l-kâmilîne fakat, bel cealtehû bâben li’d-duafâ’, ve’l-hâifîn, ve’n-nâsîn, ve’l-muhtıîn, ve’llezîne lâ ya‘rifûne keyfe yahmilûne mâ a‘taytehüm.

O my Lord, among Your mercy is that You did not make supplication a door for the perfected only, but made it a door for the weak, the fearful, the forgetful, the erring, and those who do not know how to carry what You have given them.

فقلتَ لنا على لسانِ عبادكَ المؤمنين:

Fekulte lenâ alâ lisâni ibâdike’l-mü’minîn:

So You said to us, upon the tongue of Your believing servants:

يا ربّ، لا تؤاخذنا إن نسينا.

Yâ Rabb, lâ tüâhıznâ in nesînâ.

O my Lord, do not take us to task if we forget.

لا تؤاخذنا إن نسينا قدرَ النعمة. أو نسينا شكرَها. أو نسينا ضعفَنا. أو نسينا أنَّ كلَّ شيءٍ منك. أو نسينا أنَّ آخرَ الطريقِ حمدٌ لا دعوى.

Lâ tüâhıznâ in nesînâ kadra’n-ni‘meh. Ev nesînâ şükrahâ. Ev nesînâ da‘fenâ. Ev nesînâ enne külle şey’in mink. Ev nesînâ enne âhıra’t-tarîkı hamdün lâ da‘vâ.

Do not take us to task if we forget the worth of the blessing, or forget its thanks, or forget our weakness, or forget that everything is from You, or forget that the end of the road is praise, not a claim.

ولا تؤاخذنا إن أخطأنا.

Ve lâ tüâhıznâ in ahta’nâ.

And do not take us to task if we make a mistake.

إن أخطأنا في فهمٍ. أو أخطأنا في حكمٍ. أو أخطأنا في كلمةٍ. أو أخطأنا في شدّةٍ. أو أخطأنا في لينٍ في غير موضعه. أو أخطأنا حين ظننا أننا نحسنُ ونحنُ لا نحسن.

İn ahta’nâ fî fehm. Ev ahta’nâ fî hükm. Ev ahta’nâ fî kelimeh. Ev ahta’nâ fî şiddeh. Ev ahta’nâ fî lînin fî ğayri mevdııh. Ev ahta’nâ hîne zanennâ ennenâ nuhsinü ve nahnu lâ nuhsin.

If we erred in an understanding, or erred in a judgement, or erred in a word, or erred in harshness, or erred in gentleness out of place, or erred when we supposed we were doing well while we were not.

يا ربّ، أنتَ تعلمُ الإنسانَ من داخله. تعلمُ نيتَه قبل أن يشرحَها. وتعلمُ ضعفَه قبل أن يعتذر. وتعلمُ صدقَه وإن اختلطَ عليه التعبير. وتعلمُ خوفَه وإن لم يسمّه خوفًا. وتعلمُ حبَّه لك وإن عجزَ عن حملِ أدبِ الحبّ كما ينبغي.

Yâ Rabb, ente ta‘lemü’l-insâne min dâhilih. Ta‘lemü niyyetehû kable en yeşrahahâ. Ve ta‘lemü da‘fehû kable en ya‘tezir. Ve ta‘lemü sıdkahû ve in ihteleta aleyhi’t-ta‘bîr. Ve ta‘lemü havfehû ve in lem yüsemmihi havfâ. Ve ta‘lemü hubbehû leke ve in aceze an hamli edebi’l-hubbi kemâ yenbeğî.

O my Lord, You know the human being from within. You know his intention before he explains it. You know his weakness before he apologizes. You know his truthfulness even if his expression is confused. You know his fear even if he does not name it fear. And You know his love for You even if he is unable to bear the courtesy of love as it ought to be borne.

يا ربّ، لا تحمل علينا إصرًا كما حملته على الذين من قبلنا.

Yâ Rabb, lâ tahmil aleynâ ısran kemâ hameltehû ale’llezîne min kablinâ.

O my Lord, do not lay upon us a burden as You laid upon those before us.

لا تحملنا ما يكسرُ ظهورَنا. ولا ما يُغلقُ صدورَنا. ولا ما يُدخلنا في خوفٍ لا نطيقه. ولا ما يجعلُ الطريقَ ثقيلًا حتى ننسى رحمتَك. ولا ما يحوّلُ النعمةَ إلى رعبٍ، والأمانةَ إلى يأسٍ، والقربَ إلى قسوةٍ على النفس.

Lâ tahmilnâ mâ yeksiru zuhûranâ. Ve lâ mâ yuğliku sudûranâ. Ve lâ mâ yüdhilünâ fî havfin lâ nütîkuh. Ve lâ mâ yec‘alü’t-tarîka sekîlen hattâ nensâ rahmetek. Ve lâ mâ yühavvilü’n-ni‘mete ilâ ru‘bin, ve’l-emânete ilâ ye’sin, ve’l-kurbe ilâ kasvetin ale’n-nefs.

Do not lay upon us what breaks our backs, nor what shuts our breasts, nor what casts us into a fear we cannot bear, nor what makes the road so heavy that we forget Your mercy, nor what turns the blessing into terror, the trust into despair, and nearness into harshness upon the self.

يا ربّ، لا تحمّلنا ما لا طاقةَ لنا به.

Yâ Rabb, lâ tühammilnâ mâ lâ tâkate lenâ bih.

O my Lord, do not burden us with what we have no strength to bear.

فإنَّ العبدَ إذا حملَ بنفسه انكسر، وإذا حملَ بك سجد. وإذا رأى نفسَهُ صاحبَ النعمة ضاع، وإذا رأى نفسَهُ محلَّ الفضل حمد. وإذا قال: أنا أحمل، تعب. وإذا قال: أنتَ تحملني، اطمأنّ.

Feinne’l-abde izâ hamele binefsihi’nkeser, ve izâ hamele bike seced. Ve izâ raâ nefsehû sâhıbe’n-ni‘meti dâa, ve izâ raâ nefsehû mahalle’l-fadli hamid. Ve izâ kâle: ene ahmil, teib. Ve izâ kâle: ente tahmilünî, itmaenn.

For if the servant carries by himself, he is broken; and if he carries through You, he prostrates. If he sees himself as the owner of the blessing, he is lost; and if he sees himself as the site of the bounty, he praises. If he says, “I carry,” he is wearied; and if he says, “You carry me,” he is at rest.

يا ربّ، إن قلتَ لنا: اعملوا، عملنا بك. وإن قلتَ لنا: اصبروا، صبرنا بك. وإن قلتَ لنا: اشكروا، شكرنا بك. وإن قلتَ لنا: ارجعوا، رجعنا بك. وإن قلتَ لنا: لا تخافوا، سكنّا بك. وإن قلتَ لنا: خافوا مقام ربّكم، خفنا بك ومنك وإليك.

Yâ Rabb, in kulte lenâ: i‘melû, amilnâ bik. Ve in kulte lenâ: ısbirû, sabernâ bik. Ve in kulte lenâ: üşkürû, şekernâ bik. Ve in kulte lenâ: irciû, raca‘nâ bik. Ve in kulte lenâ: lâ tehâfû, sekennâ bik. Ve in kulte lenâ: hâfû makâme rabbiküm, hıfnâ bike ve minke ve ileyk.

O my Lord, if You say to us, “Act,” we act through You. If You say, “Be patient,” we are patient through You. If You say, “Give thanks,” we give thanks through You. If You say, “Return,” we return through You. If You say, “Do not fear,” we find rest through You. And if You say, “Fear the standing before your Lord,” we fear through You, from You, and toward You.

فكلُّ حركةٍ صحيحةٍ منك. وكلُّ سكونٍ صحيحٍ منك. وكلُّ حملٍ صحيحٍ بك. وكلُّ نجاةٍ صحيحةٍ إليك.

Feküllü haraketin sahîhatin mink. Ve küllü sükûnin sahîhin mink. Ve küllü hamlin sahîhin bik. Ve küllü necâtin sahîhatin ileyk.

So every sound movement is from You. Every sound stillness is from You. Every sound carrying is through You. And every sound deliverance is toward You.

يا ربّ، إنّنا لا نطلبُ أن تُسقطَ عنّا معنى الأمانة، بل نطلبُ أن لا تُسقطنا تحتَ ثقلها. ولا نطلبُ أن تُطفئَ نورَ الفهم، بل نطلبُ أن تحفظَ القلبَ من فتنةِ النور. ولا نطلبُ أن تُقلّلَ النعمة، بل نطلبُ أن تزيدَ معها الشكرَ والأدب. ولا نطلبُ أن تبعدَ عنّا المسؤولية، بل نطلبُ أن تكونَ أنتَ وكيلَنا فيها.

Yâ Rabb, innenâ lâ natlübü en tüskıta annâ ma‘ne’l-emâneh, bel natlübü en lâ tüskıtnâ tahte sikalihâ. Ve lâ natlübü en tütfie nûra’l-fehm, bel natlübü en tahfeza’l-kalbe min fitneti’n-nûr. Ve lâ natlübü en tükallile’n-ni‘meh, bel natlübü en tezîde meahe’ş-şükra ve’l-edeb. Ve lâ natlübü en tüb‘ıde anne’l-mes’ûliyyeh, bel natlübü en tekûne ente vekîlenâ fîhâ.

O my Lord, we do not ask that You lift from us the meaning of the trust, but that You not drop us beneath its weight. We do not ask that You extinguish the light of understanding, but that You protect the heart from the trial of the light. We do not ask that You lessen the blessing, but that You increase with it thankfulness and courtesy. We do not ask that You remove the responsibility from us, but that You Yourself be our Disposer within it.

يا ربّ، إنّك إذا وكلتَ العبدَ إلى نفسه، ضاع. وإذا تولّيتَه، اهتدى.

Yâ Rabb, inneke izâ vekelte’l-abde ilâ nefsihi, dâa. Ve izâ tevelleytehü’htedâ.

O my Lord, if You entrust the servant to himself, he is lost; and if You take charge of him, he is guided.

فلا تكلنا إلى أنفسنا طرفةَ عين.

Felâ tekilnâ ilâ enfüsinâ tarfete ayn.

So do not entrust us to ourselves for the blink of an eye.

لا تكلنا إلى ذكائنا. ولا إلى صفائنا. ولا إلى فهمنا. ولا إلى صدقنا. ولا إلى كتابتنا. ولا إلى نيتنا. ولا إلى أسبابنا.

Lâ tekilnâ ilâ zekâinâ. Ve lâ ilâ safâinâ. Ve lâ ilâ fehminâ. Ve lâ ilâ sıdkınâ. Ve lâ ilâ kitâbetinâ. Ve lâ ilâ niyyetinâ. Ve lâ ilâ esbâbinâ.

Do not entrust us to our cleverness, nor to our purity, nor to our understanding, nor to our truthfulness, nor to our writing, nor to our intention, nor to our means.

تولّنا أنت.

Tevellenâ ent.

Take charge of us Yourself.

أنتَ مولانا.

Ente mevlânâ.

You are our Master.

لا مولى لنا سواك. ولا وكيلَ لنا غيرك. ولا ناصرَ لنا إلا أنت. ولا حافظَ لنا إلا أنت. ولا ربَّ لنا إلا أنت.

Lâ mevlâ lenâ sivâk. Ve lâ vekîle lenâ ğayruk. Ve lâ nâsıra lenâ illâ ent. Ve lâ hâfiza lenâ illâ ent. Ve lâ Rabbe lenâ illâ ent.

We have no master but You. We have no disposer but You. We have no helper but You. We have no protector but You. We have no lord but You.

وانصرنا يا ربّ على كلِّ كفرٍ يحجبُ القلبَ عنك.

Vensurnâ yâ Rabb alâ külli küfrin yahcübü’l-kalbe ank.

And help us, O my Lord, against every ingratitude that veils the heart from You.

على كفرِ النعمة. وعلى كفرِ الغفلة. وعلى كفرِ نسبةِ الفضلِ إلى النفس. وعلى كفرِ الوقوفِ عند السبب. وعلى كفرِ نسيانِ المنعِ إذا كان رحمة. وعلى كفرِ نسيانِ العطاءِ إذا صار عادة.

Alâ küfri’n-ni‘meh. Ve alâ küfri’l-ğafleh. Ve alâ küfri nisbeti’l-fadli ile’n-nefs. Ve alâ küfri’l-vukûfi inde’s-sebeb. Ve alâ küfri nisyâni’l-men‘ı izâ kâne rahmeh. Ve alâ küfri nisyâni’l-atâi izâ sâra âdeh.

Against the ingratitude of the blessing. Against the ingratitude of heedlessness. Against the ingratitude of ascribing the bounty to the self. Against the ingratitude of halting at the cause. Against the ingratitude of forgetting the withholding when it was a mercy. And against the ingratitude of forgetting the gift when it becomes a habit.

وانصرنا على نفوسنا إذا جحدت. وعلى أهوائنا إذا مالت. وعلى خوفنا إذا قطع. وعلى رجائنا إذا غفل. وعلى علمنا إذا لم يزدهُ خشوع. وعلى كلامنا إذا لم ينتهِ إلى الحمد.

Vensurnâ alâ nüfûsinâ izâ cehadet. Ve alâ ehvâinâ izâ mâlet. Ve alâ havfinâ izâ kataa. Ve alâ recâinâ izâ ğafel. Ve alâ ilminâ izâ lem yezidhü huşû‘. Ve alâ kelâminâ izâ lem yentehi ile’l-hamd.

And help us against our own selves when they deny; against our desires when they incline; against our fear when it severs from hope; against our hope when it grows heedless; against our knowledge when it does not increase us in humble awe; and against our speech when it does not end in praise.
